TFP is Planning a Server Move

After more than a year on the same server, hosted by 1and1.com, it's time to move into better digs. We've outgrown the available resources 1&1 offers. Many of you regular visitors have probably already experienced a database error or 3. Our pages load slower than they should as well.

Our new home will have the same address. You won't have to change a thing - no new settings, no updating your Favorites or Bookmarks. But you should notice a difference. The new server will provide better data retrieval and responsiveness. Even our heavily image laden pages will load faster.

The software we are using for the forums, the articles and other features all have newer versions, so we will be updating as we make the move. We may even add a new feature or 2 to help you and our visitors find the information and resources we are becoming known for. More on those later.

The move may take a couple more weeks. Please be patient as we suffer along with more database errors and delays of the pages for a bit longer. I apologize for the problems some of you may have experienced, but I am also very happy to find that we have grown to be one of the greatest flooring support sites on the Internet. It's all because of you, so I hope these new plans will show you how much we appreciate your support and participation. I'll keep you posted on the progress.

Re: TFP is Planning a Server Move

Actually, I am sending everyone the sooper seakret die-recshuns and login information.

Everyone except you, of course.

No, no, no. I better make sure everyone knows I'm kidding because there's bound to be someone, maybe even you, Mr. CP, that still doesn't quite understand.

No settings changes will need to be made by you. You don't have to change anything in your Favorites or Bookmarks.

The only thing you should remember is that when the server move is made, you might get an error message or the pages will not display. That could be for as long as a day, maybe even 2. It can't be helped. But then everything will be back better than ever.

Today I began the uploads of all the folders and files - close to 400 MB of them - to the new server. I did a lot of research on hosts and thought I picked a very good one. But then the upload speed just crawled along like I was on dialup again. I thought it was my connection and had to talk to 3 different people in India. While I was on hold for the umpteenth time, I tried the same upload on 2 other servers I use.

Turns out the fancy new server I contracted with offers great everything except upload speeds. So, I chose another server and it's moving along pretty well - for 400mb of data uploads. Once that's done, I have to upload backups of the database files, which after a year, have grown to an impressive size themselves.

Of course, uploading files and databases is just the first phase of populating a new server. Lots of configuration follows, then upgrades, tweaking and testing everything in between. I just did a similar operation for another forum for a friend and it went pretty well, so I am optimistic. I'll try to keep you all informed.

Admin: I am having to log in every time I visit. The "remember me" doesn't seem to be working- my user name pops up when I begin to type, but the password isn't there.
Are cookies not being set right? Is this a bug?

No problem on this end, Peter, I haven't changed a thing. Have you changed anything with your computer or browser settings? Maybe ask Nick what might be causing it.

Since it takes me 3 hours and 15 minutes to post one picture , my hats off to you for going to all this trouble uploading 400 MB's.

It will be worth it and I'll probably never notice anyway
