Re: Stand and Seal Health Problems

Just happened on this issue in the news. I happened to browse one of the legal sites to see what this mysterious, never before encountered substance could possibly be. C8-C9, etc. and then there it was. One of it's generic names - Naptha. As a commercial painter for 30 years, with a firm in business since 1889, I and dozens of other workers have sprayed, rolled, cleaned brushes out in pails of pure naptha almost since there was such a thing as paint. Never did we have a worker experience what is described.

Just curious about when all this changed?

I approved your post, but it would be difficult to put much credence into what you say without more information - a link or two that shows what you say has merit. It would also lend credibility if you weren't the "anonymous poster."

Not for nothin, but the Naptha is only ONE of the dangerous chemicals in this compound. There are many in it that makes it extremely flammable, but there are also several that can cause caustic burns to the surface of the lungs ON CONTACT, causing what's known in lay terms as "chemical pneumonia", and that's just one of the maladies it can cause.

Re: Stand and Seal Health Problems

Hello Forum -
I am new here and not sure if I will be able to get a response.....not sure if this topic still applicable to anyone. I do have a few general questions and do not seem to be able to get any answers so thought to reach out here. I had used stand n seal in November 2006 with a lot code different from the recall lots. It was not a product I had used before and only recently been introduced to spray sealers for tile grout. I prefer not to seal and only stick with the darker grouts but the job at hand warranted sealing. My experience had been with a pricier product purchased at Lowe's and always yielded excellent results. My partnet chose to purchase a different type of sealer and when I went to the site to seal I was not thrilled that it was a yellow-blue can of sealer that I had no experience with. Since it was right before Thanksgiving the customer wanted to move her furniture back in and so we decided to give this sealer a go. Opened all windows, to provide cross ventilation and brought a large fan into the room. Upon spraying the sealer we both quickly began to comment on how wonderful it smelled. And in fact, I had to look at the bottle couple times to make sure I was not spraying some type of air freshener. Long story short had I known then how costly to my health that sweet smell would be I would have never used the can. I am very baffled however, that in contacting the CPSC once I was well enough to, the manufacturer etc. I am being told that the cans were reformulated back to the original formula of I presume Zonyl after the recall. The cans that people ONLY got sick from were pullled because the pungent chemical was left out and flexipel was added. So did they forget about the pungent odor on the third batch and that is why they pulled it finally!!! It is tough to decipher as when my daughter phoned the hotline for stand n seal he told her that we would not have been able to remain in the room for any length of time because the odor would force us out of the room. Since both the customer and i, had become so severely ill - her on oxygen for 4 months and me trying to suck air out of a steamer because at the time I did not have health insurance and could not seek immediate medical attention, which my health paid dearly as a consequence I have to be very suspiscious and concerned about what our can truly contained then. I understand Zonyl 225 was in the original cans and that is what they may have went back to and I could have been overexposed to that but the pungent odor been supposedly re=formulated back into the can after the recall does not make since if the can I used smelled like an orange grove. If anyone had gotten sick from the new formulated batches I would greatly appreciate any information as to what was in the contents of those cans. Although much improved I am still struggling with my health and am determined to try to find answers for not only myself but also for the customer who is still freaked out that this chemical was sprayed all over her home. Any insight or info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time.

I don't understand why you didn't seek legal advice and the place you bought the product wasn't held responsible for your health care. It is not too late. Contact an attorney that specializes in personal injury cases now.

Re: Stand and Seal Health Problems

Unfortunately, there are several people I've heard from in the same boat, and I don't see much I can do to help them out. If the injuries weren't caused by a can from the recalled lots, it seems the lawyers aren't interested in taking the case. It really sucks, and it's not right, but that's the reality.

Re: Stand and Seal Health Problems

I am sifting through as much information as I can regarding the matter. I am currently being told by legal, after being filed in the courts in Georgia for over 1 year, that BRTT/Roanoke are only assisting people whom inhaled the flexipel ONLY as flexipel shiould not have been aerosolized. I have a sheet from dupont on the zonyl 225 stating not to aerosol that either. I am being told that I am the only one sick from this and that my symptoms are not the same as others injured. Well I don't know about that because I can only speak of my experience and the experience of the customer whom also became severely ill after using this product. Again, my unfortune was that I did not seek medical care immediately and suffered dearly as a result. If there is anyone else out there that was sickened by any of the other cans, not on the recall, it would be interesting to hear, as it sounds like there may be no recourse or help for us and if you had become ill after using the product and found yourself still not well, at the very least speaking with someone whom can relate may be at the very least something. Zonyl in itself is a bit tough to research as it also seem to be one of those chemicals trying to be phased out of our daily products according to what I can locate thus far. At the time they switched to the flexipel was the same time the red flag was being raised about this ingredient. I wondered if they decided to use flexipel and then, of course, people were seriously harmed, and then they went back to ????? Zonyl???? All I had been told is that per" Roanoke scientist" legal was told my can was made in 2007 and they took the flexipel out. How I asked could my can have been made in 2007 when it was purchased in November 2006. They could not explain that and so I am a bit left with not knowing what truly is in or can. Anyway I ramble to much, I have tooooo many questions!!! I will keep digging around and see if I could find out what happened and when.....and maybe can provide more info to anyone else.
Thanks for your assistance and replies.

Re: Stand and Seal Health Problems

IF you inhale any of this stuff what do you think it is going to do to your lungs if it seals grout?

And who knows how long those particles stay in the air?

If using these spray type sealers I personally would HIGHLY recommend the use of a respirator during application.
