lumps under padding

my mom died a few months ago and now its time to sell her place. we want to fix a few things but we have to keep costs very low because none of us has very much money. found some hard lumps under the carpet thats in the hall and living room. it looks like its only in the traffic areas. they only stick up a little and wont lay flat when you press on them. theres somthing under there but i dont know what. do you know what it might be? do you think we can just leave it and let the new owners deal with it? it doesnt show very much but you can feel them when you walk on them. the carpet is pretty old but looks ok when clean. i look forward to your advice.

Re: lumps under padding

Hi Steven, the only good way is to pull up the carpet to determine the real cause without damaging the carpet and possibly making some visible holes in the carpet. But give us some more details and we'll try to help. Have these lumps been there or have they just appeared recently. Is the floor squeaky in this area? Do the lumps move? Are they sharp when walked on in stockings/bare feet? Are the lumps evenly spaced say about 16 inches apart?

Re: lumps under padding

It sounds like some extra pad bunched under the carpet. Maybe the installer used a stinger to stretch it and it will sometimes do that along with damage to the sub floor. Or maybe they missed some pad scrap before they put the new pad in.

Re: lumps under padding

Try smacking the hard spots with a hammer. If from a stinger it may help. If they are hard spots in the pad well it may mean tearing up the carpet to remove them.
The hammer is not a cure mind you.

Haha, Rusty, we've all heard that urban legend.

We have a saying in this business, when in doubt, take a hammer to it ..

We sometimes encounter hard pieces in chipfoam pad, usually pull them out, if not, staple it. Unless you are prepared to lift the carpet and pad, by all means, see if you can tap it out with a hammer.

Re: lumps under padding

thank you for helping me.
ken: we moved some furniture out and under the couch the carpet looks almost new. its a hi-lo carpet with almost shag long yarns and real short yarns that dont have cut ends like the long ones. i pulled the carpet back from the corner a little and it has a brown canvas back and theres a redish padding with a skin on top that is like real thin layers of tangled fibers. thats the best way i can describe it. the bottom of the padding has a pattern of bumpy ridges. it almost looks like clay colored and seems like it is crumbly along the edges. its not very soft. the lumps arent under where the furniture was. its just where you walk and only 8 or 9 lumps in the living room and a few in the hall. the floor under the carpet looks like plywood with some knots. it doesnt squeak where the carpet is but it does a little in the kitchen. the lumps dont have a set spacing just sporadic. i dont know when the lumps came. i never noticed before and mom never said anything. my sister said she felt them before but doesnt remember when the first time was. the carpet must be more than 15 years old and maybe more than 20.
kwfloors:the lumps arent as thick as 2 layers of the padding. it almost feels like no padding in places next to the lumps but the padding isnt very soft and the carpet is kind of thick anyway so its hard to tell.
daris mulkin: the lumps didnt go away after hitting them with the hammer but they did move a little. i hit one lump a lot and now there are 5 or 6 smaller lumps in the same place.
rusty baker and dj: ha ha i thought that was funny but my sister said she hoped my niece didnt see this. thanks again for the help. sorry for my typing. i hate this laptop i borrowed.

Re: lumps under padding

Sound like bubble rubber. It had a clay base and deterorated over time. Not much you can do but replace it. 20 years ago, it was used all the time.

Re: lumps under padding

Steven: Sounds like the pad has broken down, and where you are feeling lumps is where it has collected in spots. Your best bet is to pay an installer to lift the carpet, replace the pad (even the cheapest pad will do, carpet is old and purchaser will probably replace it anyway) and have the carpet reinstalled. Those old sculptured carpets never die ....

Nick, once we got past the spider-webby backing, we used shovels ... it was called hush puppy here.

Re: lumps under padding

Yup sounds like it was the old rubber pad that has went south. We used to take it up with a snow shovel and broom. It has turned to powder. If the carpet is 15-20 years old I would replace both pad and carpet. The expense of tearing it up and R&R the pad is almost like buying a saddle for a dead horse. Not much value in it anymore.
Just a suggestion. I don't know if you are planning on selling or keeping the house or not. The style and color may not be any where near what is style today.

Sometimes it gets hard like concrete and almost impossible to remove.
