Home made "knee kicker" board or carpet stretcher?

Situation: For other DIY'ers, I am DIY'er faced with transition in doorway between new engineered oak floor in LR and old carpet in hall. Carpet had recoiled. How to bring it forward to oak threshhold molding transition piece for nice neat appearance? Too far from HD, et al., to rent knee kicker (and too cheap), so made my own "hammer kicker" (if that is not an oxymoron). Scrap 2x4 ~30" long, drew line ~1 1/2" in from edge, drove 2" brads @ 45 deg. angle (jig of scrap 3/4 cut at 45), 1" intervals, leaning to the short edge. Looked at carpet and judged that ~3/8" ht would catch the fiber backing. Cut brads with side cutter pliers accordingly with 3/8 block to ensure uniform ht (wore safety glasses). What happened? It worked: cut back and stapled old foam padding, removed debris and installed tack strip ~1/4-5/16" from edge of transition strip; goobered lots of wood glue on edge of carpet backing to stop fraying; set 2x4 on carpet so that the forward edge was just started over the tack strip; then on hands and knees (head over carpet, knees on wood floor), with one hand on board, hammered board toward me with mallet, stretched 1/4+" enough to take wow out of carpet; hammered leading 2x4 edge now bearing on the carpet over the tack strip to force carpet onto the tack strip; rolled 2x4 on edge and hammered it some more; trimmed the carpet the best I could, drove the carpet edge in groove between tack strip and molding by hammering on hatchet (had wood mallet, sorta worked), mallet on Red Devil 8" pry bar with square edge worked much better; trimmed carpet flush (mostly) with the sharpest knife I could find (serrated bread knife); then installed 5 staples with air brad nailer between tack strip and transition. Not a super pro job, but ok for me. P.S. My knees have found that good jell knee pads are well worth their extra cost over the cheapies. P.P.S. Remember to install the tack strip so that the little pointy goodies face away from the direction of pull...almost got myself on that one. Best, Wecanoe

Some more proof of the old adage: "Necessity is the mother of invention."
In spite of all my flooring know how, I have to say good job.

Back in the 60's, before I knew anything about carpet, I helped an elderly man build a house. He stretched his carpet with a board with angled nails, a bumper jack and a 2x4.

Thanks for your comment. If the mallet had not worked on this short stretch, I was going to test the bumper jack hypothesis. Best, Wecanoe

Mcbrides,

Thanks for your post. Weeeelll, I dunno. I think I will pass on that one. In my experience those denizens of Toronto that I have encountered, I have greatly respected for their perspicacity, not to mention native wit and intelligence. Best, Wecanoe

My British father hammered a superior vocabulary into me, he musta missed that one. He once lambasted me for using the word 'irregardless' at a social function. Learned the hard way ...

Thanks, Wecanoe, and Peter, too.
