Carpet underlay - opinions?

I'm considering getting a carpet underlay e.g:

Years ago I bought a similar product to use in a kitchen drawer to prevent the cutlery caddy from slipping back and forth. In time it got old and I decided to throw it away. When I removed it from the bottom of the drawer, it seemed to have gotten stuck to the bottom. It left a rubbery residue stuck to the bottom as well as a bit of the color (that one was blue). Maybe it was in a drawer next to the stove and the warmer area caused that to happen. But that experience is making me hesitant to use a similar product on the floor.

Does any have any experience with these kind of products? suggestions/opinions?

re: Carpet underlay - opinions?

With area rugs being a significant part of our annual revenue, yes, I have experience with the type of cushion you describe. It is my professional opinion that these type of underlays are absolute garbage and, aside from the incredible mark up made on these cushions, I can't for the life of me understand how people can continue to peddle such trash. How's that for not beating around the bush?

I have seen the condition of sticking, staining and discoloration you describe on area rugs. It is not uncommon and not the result of heat.

The best type of non slip underlay are the fiber type. My recomendation would be for a product similar to Dura-Hold by the No-Muv Corporation.

Hope this helps,

Dobby

Dobby, Jim - Thanks for your response. I was leery about that product and strangely IKEA also has a similar product but now I'll look for the one you suggested. I'm in Canada hopefully it is available here.

Hi BMU and Dobby, it's been my experience ( 30 some odd years) that Durahold pad, generally will not work on smaller rug sizes, unless it's "Soft Back" or "Karaloc Backings"( Approximately 9' x 9' or smaller), as the nonskid properties are not aggressive enough. I like using a flat none-skid bottom, with a fleece material top, for small area rugs or runners, Unfortunately I have no experience knowing if it leaves marks or sticks to the hard surface, generally I'm never back to that customers home to find out.

Hey everybody, have you experienced smaller rugs shifting on Durahold ? and if so, what measures were applied to fix.

Hey inspector dudes, what experience do you have with this ? Is it urethane
none-skid or rubberized none-skid that dis-colors or sticks to the surface. What can we look for in a none-skid pad to provide a quality product that works with-out causing damage.

I am constantly laying out two or three different none-skid pads (in the shop) to see what works best for each (rugs) backing type.

Take Care ~Mike

Re: Carpet underlay - opinions?

Mike, quite frankly I have only inspected one rug in 11+ years and it was installed by double stick as an inset in wood. A cleaning complaint.

Being that rugs are are easily removed, there is nowhere near the near for an inspector to come to the site.

My understanding of Durahold is it is a synthetic needle punched material with a latex rubber back coating. I would presume it is a relatively high viscosity coating that is not frothed and as such, will oxidize and break down much slower than a rubber pad intended for installation under broadloom.
