Probably was a 2nd. I knew a dealer who sold a lot of seconds. I have seen whole rolls with a bad place down the center. Installers were expected to split it down the middle, take out the streak and seam it back together.

Rusty, that dealer is notorious for making his money selling seconds as firsts. Of course it was a reclassified remnant. That's why we told her not to go there in the first place.

Another of his customers told us a story about how they had lines all over their newly-installed living room carpet, he complained to the dealer, the dealer came over and gave them another song-and-dance, and then the customer actually pulled up part of the carpet and laid it back on itself ~ there was seaming tape all over the back of it ~ the dealer told them they were "anti-static strips".

Loss of twist and corn rowing are different concerns. The carpet on the pictures showed no evidence of excessive untwisting.

Re: Is it possible to vacuum frieze WITHOUT damaging it?

I found no evidence of twist loss on the ones I inspected. In 1973 I sold the floorcovering for a new house built by the little brother of my banker. He picked out the most expensive deep pile saxony in a dark chocolate brown for the entire house. We used the thick 9/16" pad that was in vogue at that time. When we finished, he could barely open his front door. He soon had a bad case of cornrowing as a result of the door rubbing on the carpet. The door was made of steel so there was no way to cut off the door. He had two options, reinstall the door, or remove the carpet at the entry. He was extremely indignant and was convinced it was my fault and I had to fix it. Luckly my banker stepped in and straightened his little brother out.
