Send me a copy, Roland and I'll put it on our TFP calendar, if it isn't already.

Not to be negative, but it takes a lot of training and knowledge to do flooring. There are things to contend with that the novice would never consider. I wish you well, but it will be tough. I have been in this trade almost 40 years and am still learning.

I have attended the NWFA wood basics course and would recommend it if where you want to start is wood. As an inspector, I'm not a backer of this association, but the course is an excellent introduction to installation.
I hope you are aware that flooring is somewhat unique in that each type requires specialized tools, some rather cheap but many on the pricey end. You mentioned you have tapped most of not all of your resources. I hope that included a tool budget...
I echo the "welcome aboards" and do wish the best of success in your new venture, both personal and professional

Jay what kind of tools and equipment did you guys purchase were they new or used?
How long ago be specific did you work with flooring and what kind?
What age group are you two in?
Jay I love to see you guys willing to dream and work hard to get there.
However, I cannot and will not be your pep squad. Based on the information you have given us. With the experience you have, you are going to fail and you will be heart broken and broke. You both need knowledge and more knowledge. You need to work at least four years as an apprintice before thinking of going out on your own.
I do not mean to be crule or hurtful, but the real world takes no prisenors.
We have a thread here where the installers tell how many years they have been on their knees. Look it up I think you will find it an eye opener.
Live your dream, but do not let it become a nightmare.
May God be with you and your bride.

I think they have a chance. Ya never know. They could be the next David Hunt, I think they are showing some good savvy in coming to a knowledgeable site and asking questions that some might be embarrassed to ask. I hope they keep asking, learning, and succeed, thereby leading by example.

I would suggest giving consideration to those installers in your area also. Dont drop prices to gain work, many installers work very hard and long to get prices where they belong, if you drop the market value of what you are doing you will gain enemies not friends in your area, and will restart a long process of getting prices where they belong once you realize you should be getting more. Also dont be afraid to share jobs with a more knowledgeable installers if they are willing, you could learn alot.

Mr. Reeves is right, I'm not an idiot, this is not the most logical decision, but I'm a quick learner and determined, and most importantly TIRED of workin for the man, and getting screwed in the end. If I fail it will be on me not anyone else. I have a wonderful woman by my side and we are gonna give it hell... I'm nervous as a preacher in a whore house, but we've made our decision to press on. I know were gonna make mistakes, but we really just wanna learn and be the best flooring company in the area.I love to see a job well done and take pride in whatever Im doing

No offense, but I'm surprised that a retailer would hire you without installation references. I have hired and fired installers and would not hire any without references.
