I am a big fan of double stick padding but you have to watch the thickness when doing wall to wall. You will end up with a "picture frame" around the room if the pad is to low/high up against the tackstrip. Good firm felt is another choice.
This is what I am referring to ...

Tia, they aren't suggest the the ftf wilton be double stuck, but rather used the same pad that you would use in a double stick situation for this stretch in installation. Primarily a higher density, lower profile pad.

You ABSOLUTELY can use tack strip on a double glue down install. But you must be careful to use the right tackstrip or you will see a picture frame or a lump because of the height difference in the pad and/or tack strip. I merely suggested that type of pad for the firmness. It comes in a variety of density's and thickness.
I've got a 15x115 double glue down on Monday with double stik pad. I will take pics.

When working with a woven carpet, doing a double glue using tack strip around the wall give's a nice tuck look and less chance of frying at wall.

I just know we've had many double-sticks done with no tackless, tight to the walls, no fraying. My experiences ...

Yes ! very true, The best case scenario ( installing tackless for double stick ) isn't the only scenario for accomplishing quality work, however, IMHO one must understand the products characteristics, the job conditions and the Mechanics skill level before dismissing the use of the tackless strip.
I'm crazy about mock-ups, I try to duplicate the site conditions and then give it a try, 2' with tkls. and 2' with-out, then observe and analyze so as to make an informed decision.

OMG, I've been trying forever to get someone to do me a mock-up of a waterfall vs. a bullnose step, so I can SHOW people. My biggest problem is understanding a lot, trusting the quality of work on a select few, then dealing with the remainder ...

Any chance you can show us, via pictures, a mock installation of a double-stick, one with and one without the tackless, using the same carpet and pad for each? I think it would illustrate the concept well.

usually my mock-ups are quick and crude, not picture worthy, but I'll try, unless someone else beats me to the punch.

Sorry ! Tia, " then dealing with the remainder " ( I'm confused I have Fuzz on the brain, could you second grader proof that comment )
As for doing the mock-up, I say have at it, surprise your husband. (Him) --- what's going on in their O lovely one, I'm trying to watch the game over that noise. (Tia) ---- I'm working on a craft project O handsome one,I'll show ya when I'm done. (Him) ---- Hey !! I'm missing some staples from my electric gun, I could have sworn I had 37 of them left in the clip. ( Tia ) ---- O- sweetie, you were sleep walking the other night and I caught you stapling the steps.
Hey Tia, some of the stair runner mills are using mock-up stairs as part of their display. Maybe, give that a try.

"Then dealing with the remainder" - meaning, what I know, then dealing with quality pros, and then forced to deal with what I don't know and installers who either don't care or don't make the cut for the long-term.
Mike, there is no way I could do a mock-up of step installations, but nice scenario you gave! Actually, I could make a helluva effort, but it wouldn't be the same! My crafts in life are way different than knowing how to properly install stair carpet, especially when my husband is seriously an expert on them. I'd make a fool of myself!

Then you would think he would have no problem whipping up a mock up stair set for ya!!
I have seen them with a bull nose birdcage on the bottom, a cap and band on the second and a waterfall on the third step. Looks really cool sitting in the store.

Agree! Would love to see this! He is great on explaining once he gets there, but doesn't seem to understand the sales process. Mainly, most people who have one type cannot get a visual of the better one. Perhaps I could provide picture examples, at least! Those, I do have for some situatons! Okay, start taking a portfolio ...
