What exactly is a "birdcage" step?? I'm sure I've seen them but I might just not have a fancy name for them.

They are those circular spindle stair bottoms - when you get to the bottom of the stairs and the haindrail goes into a cirlce. Very popular in high-class houses in the '50s-'60s. Replacing carpet on a birdcage is a big pain, as it usually a number of wrought iron (or wood) spindles in a circle or partial circle on a step edge with a curve. When it's on both sides, it's called a double birdcage ...

Yeah, I've done one of those. Huge PITA if you have a "touchy" carpet.
