They are those circular spindle stair bottoms - when you get to the bottom of the stairs and the haindrail goes into a cirlce. Very popular in high-class houses in the '50s-'60s. Replacing carpet on a birdcage is a big pain, as it usually a number of wrought iron (or wood) spindles in a circle or partial circle on a step edge with a curve.
