According to the show MythBusters...
Removing skunk odor with...: Results of the various cleansers:
Tomato juice: smelled like a "bloody mary," but no skunk smell. plausible
Beer (MGD): used to cleanup bathroom where skunk sprayed. "Smells like the men's room at a dive bar." busted
Douche: Adam took a swig to verify that it's composed vinegar and water. "Not so fresh." busted
Hydrogen peroxide + baking soda + liquid dish soap: it worked. Apparently the mixture releases oxygen compounds that bond with thiols and neutralize their smell. confirmed
Commercial skunk remover: worked, but not as well as the hydrogen peroxide mixture. ok
That was a funny episode...it was actually hard to get the skunk to spray them, lol
The tomato juice worked ok, but took a few times.
Good luck

Re: Skunk Odor
Here's your mix ratios Nick.

Homemade skunk smell deodorizer. Works great and is cheap and easy to make. Mix and use immediately....
1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide
1/4 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid dish soap
Instantly removes the skunk odor. Can be used on animals too. Just don't get it in their eyes.
It also works well on most organic malodors.
Take care,
Lisa

X-O can be sprayed on the animal. It is natural and organic. You can also spray on yourself after washing the dog, it is that safe, just don't get it in the eyes. Most all Vets carry it and I think Gary Heacock carries it also. It eliminates all odors instantly and permanently, I know personally after my Jack Russel tangled with a skunk. www. xocorp.com

DOH!
Sorry for not putting the mixture ratios up, Danny...it was late when I posted that and half asleep.
Big Thanks to Lisa for picking up my slack

Re: Skunk Odor
I used the perioxide-soda-dishsoap recipe on my dog this spring when she got sprayed. There was still an odor, but I didn't do all her face too well, and she got it head on. I went straight to work after the incident...I didn't notice that I had gotten pretty smelly in the process myself. We had an installers meeting that day, I walked, in, everyone else walked out. I was excused for the day.

Re: Skunk Odor
As one who has seems to always have dogs that love those slow moving black 'kitties' with the cute white stripes. It's my belief that the only thing that really works is time. Don't get me wrong, I'm not putting down any the suggested methods recommended above. Tried most of them and found the store brand 'Skunk-Off' to be the best. As a matter of fact, we keep a bottle of it in the garage just for such events. This being said, here's my view on skunk odor.
It's my opinion that nothing 'really' works to remove skunk odor. At the moment of contact and exposure we're willing to try a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g that might work. And we do! Then, we try something else, and something else and, did that work?...so we try something else. Finally, exhausted, we ask ourselves, is that it?....ah, yes! That's it, we can't smell it, the odor is gone! WE WON - WE WON!!! That horrible odor is finally gone.
Meanwhile, two things have actually happened. First we have diluted the pure skunk smell to a vinegar-citrus-tomato-chemical-skunk smell. Sweet! And second, we have burned out our noses. After several hours of scrubbing, scouring & cleaning, unbeknownst to us, we couldn't smell a manure truck if we were sitting on it!
Oh sure, we're all happy and impressed with ourselves until the next day. When traveling about on life's duties. And this always happens to me when I'm waiting in line at a register counter and a person near you asks "I smell skunk, do you smell it?" and I always take a big sniff and answer "no, can't say as I do" and quickly change the subject.
You know, an example of just how silly and confused the intense smell of skunk makes us. The last time our dog bit a skunk, it was at 8:55 on a friday night. Now, living in a rural area, just having stores that remain open until 9:00 is a luxury. Thinking quick, I tossed the dog in the garage, grabbed my wallet and quickly sped off to the grocery store. Got there at 9:03, the doors were locked and the employees were gathering by the front door for exit while the cash was being removed from both registers. So, I bang on the window and plead my case 'please-please, let me in, my dog got sprayed by a skunk and I need some juice'
I thought, how can I convince them of the seriousness of my plight, the next closest store open at this hour is forty minutes away, this is not a quick story to get some mixers for a party, would they even believe me... the assistant manager let me in, and quickly directed me to the correct isle and went back to wait by the door. The other employees left as I was going in leaving the new girl waiting at the register.
Thank you- thank you I said, my dog got spr... we know, the assistant manager said with a grin, we could smell it as you kncoked on the window. Oh, and I was worried if you'd believe me.
I stayed out of that store for at least two weeks just to make sure the odor was gone. Living in a small town ya gotta be careful with stuff like this. Twenty years later you'll be explaining to your family why your known as 'skunk-man'
