Stand and Seal Health Problems

For any of you who are looking to do your own tile installations, or even if you've had someone come in and install your tile, and you're going to seal it, STAY AWAY from the spray on sealers, most notably, Tile Perfect's Stand and Seal aerosol sealer at Home Depot. THis stuff is allegedly responsible for sending DOZENS of people to the hospital with chemical pneumonia immediately after use, as well as two deaths that have been attributed to its use.

Also, these problems are not restricted to just before the recall. There have been several since, as well.

That doesn't even include stories that have been done on it on both local and national tv news (including a follow-up that will be done soon by a CBS affiliate in Denver that originally broke the national story).

As for parent companies, it was recently bought out by TEC's parent company (H.B.Fuller). As stand up a company as HBF is, I thought for sure the stuff would be taken off the market, and although they DO offer a pump spray version now, the aerosol is still available. Hopefully, its time is limited.

I read about that problem months ago. Then went thru the HD and it was still there, on sale, I tried some thinking heck, must just be them leftist whiners out there who cry about all them VOC's and refineries.

Well, I swear it worked excellent and I swear I knows I can fly fly fly away, yeah just like Peter Pan when I am using that stuff. Me likey. Smells better than those other petroleum distillates.

SOME OF THEM CHILDREN
IT IS ALSO ALLEGED THAT MULTIPLE DEATHS HAVE OCCURED AS A RESULT OF ITS USE.

Yes it is odd that a pro such as Bullitt would leave a message that might influence a consumer/DIYer because they see in his profile that he is "A Floor Pro". Might have been better had he finished by saying he was just kidding. Or maybe he wasn't and doesn't feel the concern for our visitors is warranted. I'm happy to see others feel different. Thanks for catching it and I'm sorry it didn't register with me when I first saw it.

A week ago I was in my local Home Depot and they had a full skid of Stand 'n' Seal parked in the tile isle. This is a ploy to attract attention to a product I'm sure. This was a brand new skid, I could thell this because the shape of the spray can has been changed. This DANGEROUS PRODUCT (STAND-N-SEAL) is now sporting a new look. The can is now domed so that the upper portion of the can is seamless and the diameter has been reduced (I think.) The labeling is approximately the same. The same original advertising still hangs on the the pallet-racks where it has been since before all of this began.

I'm wondering if the product has been reformulated and the dangers no longer exist. Maybe someone should aks Fuller for an explanation.

Bud-- the danger still exists. I've gotten way too many emails from people recently affected by it in the last couple of months.

this is good information to have knowledge of, but risky in how the information is stated.

One of the original victims has put together a website dedicated to gathering and disseminating accurate information as to what's going on with this product, as well as the people who've used it and had medical problems as a result.

For those who've been afflicted by the use of SnS, I highly recommend that you check out the site, keeping in mind that it's in its infancy right now, but that you can help that along by contacting the Webmaster, and giving him any information that you can.

Nothing has changed. I have the old MSDS saved as a pdf file. Their web site sports a brand new look, but the notice about the original recall is gone and there is no mention of a pump type product either. They still market it as a user friendly product with played down warnings. You can download the MSDS there and you will see it's still the same stuff. If you go to the original manufacturer site, tileperfect.com, their product listing link for sealers has been disabled. I think it's great he (Sxxxx) was able to get the domain name "Standnseal" as it's written on the can. I hope for legality issues he doesn't have to give it up later. As of today, googling "standnseal" didn't even bring up the site. I think I might keep hitting the site just to increase page views to make it atleast show up on a google search.
