Shower Pan Liner Patch?

I recently install a shower that was too big to not have a seem in the pan liner. I used pan liner adhesive to connect the two pieces of pan together. I just don't trust it. I was wondering if anyone knew of any kind of liquid rubber or membrane I could use to help prevent a leak? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Is this shower finished? At what stage of construction are you?

There are some paint-on membranes available. You would want to use one one the final mud bed, and there are some other tips for applying it.

I have installed the liner and durock on the walls. I am waiting for tile to come in so I am working on another job right now but the contractor wants to flood my pan liner as a test so I would like to have it right before that. What is the name of the product you are thinking of?

Re: Shower Pan Liner Patch?

I was thinking of Redgard, since that's what I use for some waterproofing, but you could probably use and of the paint-on waterproofing products out there.

With the liner adhesive, I think it specifies that after the adhesive is applied, you must keep it within a certain temperature range (somewhere around 70 degrees) for a couple or three days to allow the adhesive to cure properly. If this wasn't done, there is the possibility of a leak.

I don't do showers with PVC liners anymore, but if I did one with a splice like yours, I would definitely want a flood test before I went any further. It's much cheaper to fix now than later.

With Redgard, it must be applied in several coats to achieve a 40 mil thickness. One important thing, though, is that you'll need to let the mudbed cure for a while before applying the first coat. If you don't, the Redgard won't adhere properly and will actually come off under normal traffic, such as while you're in the shower installing tile on the wall.

So if you go that route, I would flood test right away, put your final mud bed in so it can cure, and save the Redgard until a couple of days before you are ready to start with tile. That way the mud will have cure time and the Redgard will have dry time.

Do you have some type of plastic or roofing felt behind the Durock on the walls?

Mapie has a good roll on. How about the Kerdi system you can flood the hole shower with it.

I thought about that, but he'd have to do some demo and rebuild. Plus there's be the extra expense of the materials (probably around $300). If I was already as far in as he is, I would continue on with a paint-on.

Forgot to ask you, Jason, but do you have a pre-sloped bed of mortar under that liner? And while it's not necessary, it could be helpful to have the seam of your liner running down the slope. That way if the liner ever did break loose at the seam, water would have to run uphill to get out.

I haven't used that product and don't know much about it, other than it dries really fast.

If you are planning to use a some type of waterproofing on the walls, you would not want to have plastic behind the wall board. You can have the plastic, or the waterproofing, but not both.

Why not?If you overlap to correct width, apply X-15(name of panliner adhesive) to both clean surfaces and fasten after recomended waiting time then youll be fine.Try and taks some scrap and glue em together.Try and take it apart after leaving it submerged in water a couple a days....
