First off i will say without seeing your room, I dont know exactly which way I would recommend to correct the "hump", but usually I like to try to correct the big problem before i start patching. If you can rent or borrow a diamond wheel grinder with a vacuum attachment I would try to grind the "hump" area down as far as I could first, then i would probably then consider screeding out some Patching compound for the balance of the area, this would probably be the best way so as to not end up with any height issues at the transition areas.
