Personal fan
[COLOR="royalblue"][COLOR="royalblue"]Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!
Well I hope someone can answer this question for me! I have used a personal fan that clips onto the top of my computer desk. It worked just fine for several years. I have in the past year got a new Monitor, a couple months ago I got a new computer and for the first time this year I turned the fan on and it caused my Monitor to jump and shake and quiver, very nerve racking! I have tried the fan in several different places on the computer desk -Above ,below, on the side etc. No matter where I clipped it on the desk it didn't help. I finally moved it to a stand next to the desk and it works but is not convient to reach. Any ideas? Thanks for reading.

Hi Lucy (Lucy is a friend of mine here in Quincy),
I wonder if the problem is some kind of electrical frequency thing or something to do with your monitor and not your fan? I have a monitor here at home that also has the jiggles during certain times and I can't figure it out. I thought if you posted here that Nick, the Guide here, might have an answer. I'm sure he will post as soon as he visits the board.
It's too hot here in Quincy. 100 degrees yesterday (hot to me anyway). It's almost that now. My floor fan doesn't effect my other monitor, but the vacuum cleaner does.

Well I would suggest that you not vacuum and work on the computer at the same time. LOL
I am in hopes that someone out there will tell me what is going on. But thanks for reading my post.

My cell phone makes the screen jump around and go freaky especially when it rings and I am at the computer .. it has something to do with electromagnetic interference ..
What monitor do you have ? Is the lamp incondesent ?

What lamp, Nick?
I can't remember the brand of the monitor Lucy has, but it's a CRT.

Radio Frequency Interference caused by the motor in the fan. NORMAL!
Make sure the fan is not plugged into the same circuit as the monitor and yes, moving it away are the cures.
Jim , I was thinking of a lamp because i know they have a much higher refresh ratethen a monitor , and can it seem like the monitor is flickering ..
Hope this helps you LAC ..

But this didn't happen with the last monitor. Is it possible there is a difference in the monitors or did the fan deteriorate since the last time she used it last year. It's kinda hard not to use the same circuit in a room full of outlets that are all prob'ly on the same circuit.

Well thanks for the replys.
I tried all the plugins in the computer room and they all did the same thing, they are all on the same circuit. I may run and extension cord to another circuit just to see I am curious. Yet this did not happen with my other Monitor or my old computer. Hmmmmmmmmm. ( Damn Hot flashes) or I wouldn't need the fan. LOL

Could be either Jim , I would try a different fan first .. Sometimes if you turn the monitor 15 to 30 degrees left of the fan it seems to help .. i have a surge protector liquid nailed to the side of my desk , and every thing is plugged into it .. If LAC used the same fan last year , one would think it is in the monitor .. LCD s dont have this problem .. You can try to increase the refresh rate .. Let me know how you make out .. Nick ..
To increase the monitor refresh rate, here is the official procedure for self-repair of this problem for
Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP:
(1) Close or minimize all active applications to expose the background.
(2) Right click the mouse button to select "Properties"
(3) Click the "Settings" tab
(4) Click the "Advanced" button
(5) Click the "Monitor" tab
(6) Change the "Refresh Frequency" from 60 Hertz to 75 Hertz or higher
(7) Click the "OK" button and again on the Display Properties page
(8) If the monitor allows the new refresh rate, select "OK" again
(9) Adjust the display buttons on the monitor to re-center and expand the display area to fill the
screen
(10) If the monitor is still flickering, either the monitor or the video card (or its drivers) may be
defective, in which case you should call the Help Desk to 'fix" the problem. For home PCs, consult
your "user manual and/or associated documentation" or contact the manufacturer regarding their
recommendations for servicing or warranty work.
Note that many of the inexpensive monitors that were purchased by ODIN may be inadequately
shielded ..

Excellent information, Nick. I feel bad that I didn't suggest some of this to Lucy before. I just didn't think about it.
I would hope it's not the video card. I built the system and installed a very good video card -- a GeForce 6600 GS. I think Lucy's computer is on automatic updates, but she should go online and click Tools | Windows Update to check for non-critical updates, including any new hardware drivers.
I hope that something here will resolve the problem. Then she can post a new thread on another problem she is having that I don't know the answer to.
Thanks for all your help,
Jim

personal fan
Well I followed your instructions. It was already set at 75 so I changed it to 85. Clipped the fan onto the desk where I have always used it and it still Quivers, jumps etc. Thanks for all your help but I guess my fan will live off to the left of the computer desk.

Hey Jim,
Most of my updates are automatic but I did check windows last week, I checked again after reading your post. There was 1 more update some kind of minor tool I updated but it didn't work either.
I will try and find a problem I am having so that you can fix it. You always build me such great computers that I think it is just the monitor, I think I had my old monitor the last time I used i the fan. It really isn't a big deal I just wanted to know the whys and what fors. Thanks for all the input.

My pleasure, Lucy. Unfortunately, it looks like Nick is gonna have to get the pie this time. I think he likes French Apple. Can you email him one?
I'm so funny I crack myself up.
