sometimes the data just can't be recovered at any cost .
Put the drive on the newest confuser Lo.
Or just get the usb drive like Peter suggests .
I don't like any of my data online either .

Last night, I installed the Compaq as a slave on the old computer and booted the machine. It didn't recognize this different hard drive had even been hooked up. Is that because they aren't compatable? It says its an IDE type.

Re: Will a USB memory stick.............
Yes this one has the 98se. The Compaq was my moms old one. I don't know what she had in it. 98 most likely.
I just thought I'd try the Compaq HD as a slave on this computer and see what happened............. absolutely nothing. I was just experimenting to see if the computer would recognize that HD.
My goal at some point is to get some things from this computer onto the newer Sony PC

Re: Will a USB memory stick.............
Won't formatting a drive erase all the original information and data on the drive? I think Lo wants to recover data from an old drive.

Re: Will a USB memory stick.............
I was under the impression he was trying to tranfer data to another internal drive or USB .
Yes formatting it will loose any data on the slave drive .
Lo , let me know if you have data on the slave drive you don't want to loose .

Re: Will a USB memory stick.............
I thought he was trying to get data off the old computer's HDD and store it on the new computer's HDD.
If the drives both use the same storage system, you should be able to see the data on both drives. I'd try to see if the drive shows up in Administrative Tools (or whatever they called it in Win98). Also, if the old connector worked, that's the connector he should use to connect and transfer data with - connect the HDD and connector to the mobo of the new machine, connect the power cable and boot the machine. You don't need a slot or anything else if all you want is to transfer the data to the new machine. I wouldn't trust a HDD that old to keep storing data on. Get the data off, then take the old drive apart to use the platters for cool coasters and the magnet to fool your friends when they use your new coasters for their drinks.

Re: Will a USB memory stick.............
I remember using a lot of dos commands in 98 .
I'm thinking the same thing you are T . Make coasters
In 98 if recall right you do have to format a ntfs drive to fat 32 , or both to ntfs.

I want some the data on my old '97 transferred into the newer computer. How to best do it is the question.
I can format the '97 HD later after I recover the info I need. It's been acting up more and more since I did something I shouldn't have a couple years ago. I want to save the info before it goes off the deep end.

Re: Will a USB memory stick.............
Do you have a ide connector on the new confuser ?
If so connect the drive from the old confuser > transfer the files , and put the drive back in the old one .
Some Win 98 programs may not run on XP, even in compatibility mode .
No problem with personal data .

Yes, it has an IDE jumper plug coming off the HD and a nice little slot/cage to place a second drive. It has an 80 wire connector.............. but that doesn't make any difference, correct?
On the mother board, there are two plug locations, both being used. One by the HD and one going to the DVD, CD and floppy drives.
