This would be news to me. There is a cost involved in applying a Stainmaster (or equivalent) chemical. Sounds like this salesperson wants to appear more educated about carpet than they actually are.

I would go along with the statement that all carpets having a Teflon or Scotchguard treatment though. There is a very pragmatic reason why this is applied during manufacure and it is not altruism on the part of carpet mills

Dear Rug Buyer,

Trust your instincts on this. Your salesman is an idiot. Run,... find one that at least either knows what they are talking about or is truthful. Preferably both.

Your about to spend lots of hard earned dollars on something that you are going to have to live with for many years. Be wise.

Respectfully,

Dobby

Re: What makes a quality carpet

As a retailer, my vote is for Mohawk's SmartStrand with DuPont Sorona. Since it came out a few years ago, it has become our #1 selling line. And, you have to take into account the fact that DuPont, one of the oldest fiber manufacturers in the world, sold off the Stainmaster line in favor of Sorona, before they brought Sorona to the retail floor. What could a 200+ year old, multi billion dollar company know that we don't? This is not to say that there is anything wrong with any other quality yarn, but Sorona has proven itself to be a fantastic product. We have had no quality problems with it since it came out. I have been told that Mohawk inspects it's Sorona products twice before they release them for shipment. Whether that is true or not, (I heard it from a rep), the fact remains that it is an excellent quality yarn. And, it is softer than any soft nylon yarn.

Last night I had a carpet salesman tell me when I asked for a Stainmaster carpet that all carpet is Stainmaster now. When I asked why there is no label on the carpet saying Stainmaster, he said that it is because it is not important because all carpet has it.
I wouldn't buy anything from that person. They're either an idiot or a liar, probably both.

So far I like the Sorona yarn, they just need to put it on a better quality backing.

They use to have the rights to the name Nylon. They were the first to make nylon. It was their branding.

The Germans with Badische Corp. actually developed nylon type 6 monomer (caprolactam) first, but never polymerized it into fiber until after Dr. Wallace Carothers did it for Du Point using type 6,6 in 1935. DuPont did name the polymer Nylon.
