Re: Don't Lose the Pad Glue Lid

I think it was Mike Hetts in the FCI mag that suggested using multipurpose adhesive watered down. I did just that. 50/50 mix of adhesive and water made a pretty good adhesive that would flow though a squirt bottle. But don't forget to take it in out of the cold truck in the winter. For the cost of a bucket of adhesive you end up with 8 gallons when it's all mixed.

I tape the seams, and the tape it to the tack. You can also take a small piece of tape, roll it so it sticks to it's self and put it under the pad for a little something extra. Glue costs money, and in my experience has never offered an advantage. If you are pulling the pad up on the tack, then lift your stretcher head a little after you stretch it before setting the carpet..

I saves time and money by not using as much pad adhesive. Does anyone know why you are supposed to tape the seams?

To keep the pad from separating and creating gaps that will telegraph through to the carpet.

Re: Don't Lose the Pad Glue Lid

Rebonded foam pad has been known to shrink, if not taped it will separate at the seam. Also if you slide carpet over the pad to position it you can catch the edge and curl the pad up leaving a hump in the middle of the floor. The canary joke comes to mind. And NO, beating it with a hammer will not flatten it out. (Don't ask how I know!)

If you don't tape and you slide the carpet, the edges tend to turn over and create a hump under the carpet.

Re: Don't Lose the Pad Glue Lid

We have only ever taped seams in a pinch, when we were presented a surprise. We prefer not to, because even duct tape will dry out over time and 'crackle'. We use whatever leftover adhesive we have at hand, give it about 15-20 minutes to set up, then position carpet.

CRI 105, 7.2.1 says: With the exception of fiber cushions, seams
should also be secured with appropriate cushion tape

Well, Rusty, that is probably another product they don't sell in Canada.

I haven't seen any actual cushion tape myself in probably 20 years.

Re: Don't Lose the Pad Glue Lid

spray grade contact,in a plastic bottle with a liquid nail nozzle stuffed thru the centre of the lid....squirt perim plus squirt inbetween seams of pad (no need ti lift pad at seams as the nozzle gets in there)-seams bond as one.....no tape needed .
