Removing 1/4 round

I removed the 1/4 round in my grandaughters Br today and found maybe a unique way of doing it. Its been there since the late 50's and has many coats of paint. I tried cutting the line at the top with a utility knife but it wanted to wave and not follow at the precise point of the base a 1/4 round. I took my row cutter and it not only cut it in a straight line but also went right down between the 1/4 round and the base. Got a nice clean line.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has done this but it may help someone out.

Daris

I have tried it on base. It works, you just have to not let the top cutter slip and get away from you.

I use the corner of a 6" broadknife for that sort of thing but I'll have to try the 'new' trick.

I use the loop cutter to cut excess off the vinyl , or lengths off the roll.

Now when you guys talk about it, I wonder why I even carry a loop pile cutter in my everyday tool box. If I got rid of some of those tools I never use, maybe I could shut my tool box a little easier.

IIRC he's talking about the Crain "Cushion Back Cutter", AKA: Dolphin cutter, top cutter, double cutter, pointed nose cutter with the tan handle. I think it's the #301 but hey, I drink.

Yes, it works well... not sure why I didn't remember this trick to share. Perhaps it's because I'm out here in Denver now and not back in D.C. where you could have 100 years of paint on 1/4 round.

Loop pile cutters are worthless. I gave mine away and the dude I gave it to seems to have realized the same fact. I was taught to use the damn thing for every row cut seam and hated every second of it. "Top cutter" all the way. Why adjust the gap when you can just change the pressure you are pushing down with? We are trained and paid to know how to use knives.
