Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
Here's a guy from Shaw demonstrating how to cut a seam in loop pile commercial carpet. I can't help straining my eyes to see if he actually damaged the carpet installed in the office he is using to do his demonstration.
R'gards,
Jim

Re: Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
It sure looks like he scarred the carpet at the 2 min and 20 sec area of the video. I can't imagine them making a video though with all the background noise and conversation.

Re: Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
It's called a cushion back or top cutter for a reason. No clue!

Re: Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
The soft spoken gentleman in the video is Scott Ingle from Shaw. I had the pleasure of meeting him last spring at a Shaw installation seminar. There is a second part to the video if T does not mind I will post the link.
Listen closely to what the others are saying. I get the feeling there was an installation issue on another project and Scott is showing them the proper way to make a seam.

Re: Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
For me, the scariest part of this video is the utter and complete lack of knowledge revealed in the background conversation when we realize, this dialogue is between people who earn their living in the flooring business. Nothing like knowing your products!
From the back ground dialogue, it sounds like this was a demonstration for the claims department.
BTW: I too would love to see the cuts in existing carpet. This video is proof that, in the flooring industry, you don't have to be that bright to really shine!

Re: Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
Talk about teach an old dog a new trick-me. I noticed that he put his thumb on the row he was running. How many times have you run a row not to have it show up or closeup and can't find it. The thumb thing to me is a good trick.

Re: Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
Dobby,
I was going to comment on that to but decided against it. I am not totally convinced that the voices in the background are floorcovering people. It would not surprise me though if they were.
As far as cuts in the existing carpet I seriouly doubt if there are any. Scott is a professional and a CFI installer.

Re: Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
Rob, you're right and I am jumping to a conclusion. My first assumption, based on the title and relaxed atmosphere, was this was done at a Shaw office and this is purely conjecture on my part. Good call / my apologies and sincere thanks for pointing that out.
Respectfully,
Dobby

Re: Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
Dobby,
I did not mean anything by my post nor did I have any intention of correcting you or anyone. I am not as eloquent as you are with the english language and I do my best at butchering it at every opportunity. If I sounded like I was coming acrossed at correcting you I apologize.
Now on that note I had the exact same reaction as you the first time I saw that video. The first thing that came to mind was those dam sales hacks they do not even know what an awl is Then I got to thinking what if that was held in a Architects office or General Contractors office. Well those dam hacks do not even know what an awl is

Re: Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
Rob, no offense was taken and you were, and are, exactly correct.
One positive lesson I believe we can all take from this is how easily we become out of touch with the limits that form the base line of knowledge by those who support our trade. (e.g.: sales staff, builders, architects, designers and as scary as this is, the manufactures) Even, for the most basic of concepts and items like an awl, sealer, trimmer, etc..
Respectfully,
Dobby

I always use the top cutter. I think it's easier. I am just surprised he didn't tell them that they need to switch sides with the blade.

Re: Loop Pile Seam Cutting Video
Sometimes its better if you don't switch sides. I know a guy that won't on any product. His seams turn out great.
