looking to move...maybe

Guys, I joined the site to try and get a feel for the flooring trade in the USA, have enjoyed reading some of the stuff in the forums. I am an ex-fitter with 26 years in the industry now and have been lucky to work all over the world. The latter years running flooring contractors in the Far East and Middle East. I am based in Bahrain now and have a small contracting co doing carpets, wood, vinyls and access floor. For the last 12-15 years of my career I thought about moving to America just for a change and a new challange. What do you think ? is there any agencies specialising in jobs within the flooring industry? Anyway sitting here in Bahrain its just good to have contact with the real world.

Welcome to TFP, Lee.
I had to google Bahrain to figure out where you are living. Geography isn't a strong point of mine. I work solo, so I can't be of much help, but maybe the others could help with a little more info. Are you looking to install or run crews?

with your resume you may want to look into large installation firms or with one of the unions.

Your biggest challenge will be getting the required visa, i've just moved to the states from England (i married an American) and the trouble ive been through to get my work documents has been a nightmare. look into investment visa's if you have half a million to invest, otherwise i don't think there is much chance of you working in the US.

If that is true then......

THAT'S A LOT OF BULLSHIT!

Thousands of ass holes coming across our borders daily and finding work here
without any credentials and one legitimate guy wants to enter the country legally
and can't ?

I can't agree more Bud, but thats the way it is, high powered executives and the like are given a easy time but us mere flooring people are'nt deemed worthy of work visa's (based soley on the desire to work in the US). The OP could always look for a nice American girl to marry tho

Hey Lee, if they give ya any crap about a visa, just have them come to this forum and we'll set 'em straight for ya. Just tell 'em to ask for T.

Getting a work visa is tough, to get my son-in-law into this country I signed up to be responsible for 7 years. He got his citizenship and they promptly moved back to Ecuador. Go figger!

You would have a hard time getting into New Zealand as well. Lots of money so you can support yourself if you get sick etc so our Goverment doesn't have to pay. If you can get someone to sponser you and guarantee work might work. The other way is flush your passport down the toilet on the plane and become a refugee.

Those aren't purple dots, they're gray. Are you color blind? Here's a test:

Re: looking to move...maybe

Hey Guys, thanks for the feedback. The type of thing I would be looking for is a partnership in a contracting co. or maybe working for a manufacturer in export or contracts. I was hoping that if the company and the job was good enough that would solve any visa issues, mybe not ?? Anyway I will keep looking in on the site its good fun reading what you guys are up to. If any one fancies working out here let me know, not sure the rates would good enough though. At the moment our midday temp is about 46deg C I think thats about 120deg F So August is not a good time to be here.
