Manufacturers Installation Disclaimer

Try this one. I am sent out to install 60 yds. of commercial carpet in some hallways and stairs. Carpet hasn't arrived when I am sent to do tear-out. So to stay on schedule I need to go ahead and do tear-out and pad replacement. Order was for 7/16 rebond. Not a good choice in a commercial app, but designer says that is what customer could afford. We know that it will cost them more in the long haul. I aint installin pad until I see the carpet. Six hrs. later the carpet shows up. Lee's Unibond. What in the #$% am I suppose to do with this crap!!! I call tech, "areas must be heated to 70 degrees 72 hrs. before and after install. Pad should not exceed 3/8 and 16 lbs. And I would not recommend a strech-in install over 400 sq ft." Ok fax me some specs PRONTO!! I get the installation specs. Pretty much what tech told me, then at the bottom of the page it says and I quote; Lee's carpet does not guarantee results and assumes no liabilty in connectionwith these installation instructions.................. .................... ..............HUH!??!!!!...... .. So if I do it like they say to do it, they are not responsible if it don't work ???? So I can install it any way I want too and it aint gonna matter anyhow ???? Am I missin somethin here?

Its just their way of saying yuck fou and they aren't responsible for nothing. Just like if it isn't 80 degress and wind isn't out of the north with freezing rain.
Really I'm sure if you read all the warranty stuff you would find out some pretty amazing stuff.
I read on a case of Orcon tape not to let it freeze. Now who brings their tape in at night out of the bus in the northern climates. Not me!

Just remember these statements the next time someone says manufactures should be responsible for installation training.

Seriously. Think about it!

Dobby, go to see you poke your head up here

CP, I feel your pain. I'll feel more if you actually try to stretch that job in. Great for direct glue or double stick, but tackless- forgedaboutit!

Unfortunately, that is like sayin sick'em to a bulldog. If it seems undoable, well then Cp's goin for it. I'll keep ya posted on the successful install proceedures after I figure 'em out. And as always Peter, thanks for the encouragement.

OK inspector you have from now to May to think about how you will inspect this in all likelyhood failure. CP could you send those instructions to us for part of the book we will be making for the workshop? All of you send documents that you think would be good in the workshop book.

Re: Manufacturers Installation Disclaimer

That's a pretty big image file there. I'm trying to find a PDF file of the same thing.

Here's one for glue-down: http://www.leescarpets.com/site/pdf/...ith_WetSet.pdf
and: http://www.leescarpets.com/site/pdf/...dre_wetset.pdf

I can't find the one for stretch-in, so I did some editing of the image you had and made a PDF file out of it. I will contact Lee's to ask permission to post the real one here or at least link to it wherever they have it. Here is the temporary one though: Unibond and U2 Carpet Installation Guide for Stretch-in.PDF

I was able to read it. I clicked on the blue box inside the image that says... expand to actual size.

Re: Manufacturers Installation Disclaimer

cp unibond is one of those carpets that don't have to be seam sealed. If you put solvent based sealer on it it will turn black.

Gracias fer the info Daris. I did find that out during my extensive research. Got a list of certified installers for Lees Unibond today. Called a random group of them to maybe get some pointers from them. Guess how many even knew it could be stretched in.................. Out of 20 calls, one installer said he stretched it in once, but would never try it again. Said it has to be stapled at the edges cause it wont stick to the tack strip. Said to get heat up to 85 to 90 to soften it up. Said he didn't know why he was considered a certified Unibond installer, cause he just sat through a demonstration. Lee's Carpet sent me the list of their certified installers, who don't even know why they are considered certified. Uh........ok. So tomorrow will be the day of reconing I guess, eh?
