Self Leveling Underlayment Question

Hi all, new to the forum and have a question regarding self leveling underlayment. Some background:

I'm remodeling one of my bathrooms, and have it gutted. I layed Concrete backer board in all of the areas, but the floor is not perfectly level, as it's an old house. I bought some Laticrete Self Leveling underlayment from Lowe's, but the instructions on how to apply it were lacking. I believe I need to primer it first, as there are a few small areas (6" strip) through it that is plywood, that I chose to not cut out due to the nature of the room. The kit I bought came with Admix and Primer. I'm looking for validation of my plan below:

1. Do I simply apply the primer with a brush and then wait 2-3 hours?
2. Do I then mis the underlayment with water and apply with a brush and wait 4 hours?
3. Then I lay the tile? Do I need to apply thinset mortar on top of the self leveling underlayment that I put down? This is where the instructions are lacking somewhat.

Thank you,

Dan

Re: Self Leveling Underlayment Question

Level or flat Dan-0? If your intent is to get the floor level, don't waste your time and resources. If the problem is flatness or in plane then you need to fix it.

Depending on how bad it is I use either thinset or Mapei Planipatch to fill in low spots before setting the tile. You would let the patching compound set up and dry then proceed on with setting the tile. I don't know anything about the laticrete stuff you bought.

Re: Self Leveling Underlayment Question

I am not aware of any Self Leveling Compound (SLC) on the market that requires an additive, there may be. All of them that I have ever used only requires a precise measurement of water. They all also require the primer be applied first. In the case of a floor-of-many-seams, I would suggest you first install some cheap caulk in all of the cracks and anywhere else the product can seep into because BELIEVE ME it will find those cracks and seep into them. This also goes for doorways and floor vents as well as plumbing penetrations through the floor, they must all be dammed and sealed before instaing the SLC.
