Re: Age of Installers
Could not agree with you guys more ..
Haven't worked for a store in at least 20 years .. The couple of good stores i did work for years ago finally went under ..
I still don't understand the mindset that it takes no special skills or smarts to be a installer .. I blame that in part on the Mills ..I guess like everything in life it comes down to one thing .. Money ..

Re: Age of Installers
When I had help I always seemed to pay them more than I should have just to keep them onboard. They still quit. It is a tough trade to stay on top of insurance, taxes, paperwork ect. It seems more and more that government doesn't want us to work. I too noticed the pics of the meeting, alot of knowledge there I bet. I'm the age now that the installers that I learned from were. I see the other side of the hill now. This trade is changing alot faster now than it did back in the 80's and 90's. Along with all the other technology advancements or setbacks.

Re: Age of Installers
Someone mentioned that installing was hard work, and I agree. However, hard work might be keeping some of the young out of the trade, but I believe if the rewards are great enough that would not be an issue. Example on Friday of the workshop, the VO-Tech was having a contest with the masonery students laying concrete blocks and bricks making a wall. There were many students involved, and that is hard work and when the contest was over I spoke to some of the dirty tired kids and they were proud.
Lets work to bring young people into our profession with pride.

Changes are what it's all about. I'm an old guy, 63+ and I see younger guys that don't want to embrace the newer install methods and they are having problems. Old habits are hard to break. I mostly do vinyl and the new stuff is great. No plywood, no glueing, no problems. In and out, I like that. Customers like it too. Some may disagree, but I like it.

Re: Age of Installers
I agree that younger people do not seem to want to work, really work! We live in a society that promotes instant gratification. Thus, the youth among us want everything, (I mean everything) now. This attitude permeates all fields of professions unfortunately. The answer is to train the generation following the last one to be industrious. Whether they choose a blue collar or white collar profession!!

If you are also a Hawaiian Luau Dancer in your spare time you can use that stuff to burn in your torches too. Is that the stuff?
