Body Art

Just wondering what is everybodies take on body art [tattos] and piercings?
The wife and I went out to HER favorite pizza parlor the other night and there was a young man that had tattos from the tip of his fingers to his neck and maybe beyond. I was sitting where was looking at him. I thought to myself he maybe a nice guy but I don't know if I want him in my house. I don't know the cost of this stuff but from what I've heard it is expensive. He was with his wife and little girl about 2. I would think he could have spent the money on the family instead.
On the job what do you that have body art do?

Daris

Re: Body Art

I guess I'm just old, but I would not hire anyone who had a lot of body art. When my daughter was a BK manager, they could not hire anyone who had a tattoo that showed.

My daughter has tatoos. All where they can be covered up if necesary. She asked me what I thought. I told her if the good Lord wanted her to have them he would have put them on her butt. Where no one could see them. Their not cheap.

Re: Body Art

Daris. I do not let anyone work for me that has any "Visable" tattoos.... I am sure that I will hear from IWD (Indiana Workforce Devolopment) or the work Nazis as I call them. But it is my rules ...........also if anyone smokes they must do it from at least 300 feet from the house and must stand in street.. no matter what the weather..... not my or the customer fault...... and only one in morning and one in the afternoon... another rule.... no ear rings... nose rings or peirced Jewlry when working..... also no holes in Jeans, pants or shirts.... And if they "smell" to me (from Cigs... or just plain B.O.) then they smell to my customers.... and they are to leave and clean up....( haven't had to enforce that one yet, but everyone knows it ahead of time...) I am waiting for some one to turn my in to IWD... but Screw'em.......I am very funny about "1st" appearances... as my father always said " you only have one chance to make a first impression" But what do I know.....

Re: Body Art

I TOTALLY agree with you.
But from my experience in the flooring installation industry, I think we are in the minority.

Re: Body Art

I think it is shallow to judge one by tatoos or the like, but like they say first impressions do make a difference. There shoulod be some balance though

I agree totally. Couple thoughts to ponder.
............ if I showed up with long hair (I do)
............ if I showed up in a rusty old Chevy van with 249,780 miles on her. (It does)
............ if I showed up for work the first day at 10:00 (you'd be lucky )
would you hire me?
....probably not.
............... but almost every customer I have ever worked for remembers me, likes my work and almost always want's me back, and asks for a card.
This long haired maggot is doin' something right.
It's different as far as first impression goes if you show up and finish the job in two hours.
I have found first impressions if my customers actually have them....... disappear immediately after our initial introduction and conversation about the job and their concerns.
I guess I'm just a real charmer.

My only body art is the same that any installer possesses........... dried out calluses on the knuckles that make a customer stare then inquire.
I don't have a problem with "body art" if done well, and seems to have a purpose but full body armor from ankles to the neck really gets my mind wondering ............... Why the heck do you want every person on earth staring at you?
............... same with piercings in all the wrong places. An ear ring I can deal with, but nose rings, and tongue piercings drive me freekin' nuts. I hate stopping by the drive through at McD's, a 7-11, or other convenience store and the girl has a chunk of chrome clattering against her teeth.................. just gross.

Re: Body Art

I noticed this thread because in particular I do have ink, tattoo's, and plan to get more. I understand a lot of older installer's are on this board, leaven me in probably the minority as a 22 year old apprentice. But I thought I would bring to your attention an article made on cnn.com that I read through a few years ago which was very informative - abit lengthy.

Excerpt from: unknown author
The American University employee is among about 36 percent of Americans age 18 to 29 with at least one tattoo, according to a survey.

The study, scheduled to appear Monday on the Web site of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, provides perhaps the most in-depth look at tattoos since their popularity exploded in the early 1990s.

The results suggest that 24 percent of Americans between 18 and 50 are tattooed; that's almost one in four. Two surveys from 2003 suggested just 15 percent to 16 percent of U.S. adults had a tattoo.

First post btw

P.s. does anyone know how to get it so page 1 has the first post not the other way around.

Re: Body Art

Mine for reference, inside of my arm so it's not really noticeable unless you're behind me or if I have my arms up.

Re: Body Art

Older installers?????

While I hate to succumb........If everyone jumped off the bridge....? Just because Johnny does it.......?

My daughter has a 'tramp stamp' without permission. It has been 2 yrs. now she is 19. I still resent what my pretty little girl did to her body. And she does too now.

As a consumer I would question the decision making ability of a tattooed young person. I would be concerned about the wisdom and foresight that would seem to be lacking, and how that would reflect the job that I hired them to perform.

On the other hand, if someone were recommended, such as Lo, for example, I have always been able to look past the exterior appearance. (Just an example Lo, no offense meant) But Lo has established himself through much time and effort. Probably more effort because of his appearance.
Some times we have to accept the things that our decisions force upon us. More effort, overcoming prejudiced people, etc

For every action we take there will be a reaction. We have the ability to minimize or maximize that reaction by our decisions.

Different generation's will always look down upon newer one's decisions and thoughts of what is acceptible and what isn't. I'm a bit of an artist as a hobby so this is just one more way of expressing yourself. And I always thought if a tattoo has meaning and is special to you than I see no problem. But to have say a tattoo with a biker or a naked chick on your arm for the looks than I don't see much point.

*Edit* And I agree, tramp stamps are horrible and they gave me a sure fire reason to avoid girl's that had 'em, unless I wanted to get laid ;p If they let a tattoo artist pretty much have her ass in their face (cause the clothing had to mainly down half way cheek to get it on) than I'm sure she'd be willing for anyone else.

No offence to you Barry, but that's my own opinion.

Not like I would anyways nowadays, seeing as I'm 1+ year into my marriage now haha.

Just trying to point out that we do need to think of what other people thing. Esp. if we are in their homes. And that out decisions can affect our reputations for the good or bad. And even bad decisions can be over come with time.

Never had an issue thus far, lots of positive comments, none negative. Now if I had something profane or stupid tattooed I'd totally understand!
