I have more tee shirts than a nascar fan...I wake up and I am a walking billboard, because half of my shirts are from work related entities. Jackets, hoodies, zip ups, etc

Re: Frustration

Demonseed, you've over looked option D. They listen to your concerns, agree to discuss it within management and everything remains exactly as is.

As a side note, the 'give me a raise or give me unemployment compensation' position seems rather short sighted. Maybe it's just me, but, it seems you would be in a far better bargaining position if you were to line up another form of employment first, give them a two week notice, and then discuss what it's going to take to retain your services as an employee.

Even if everything is exactly as you portray it, to yield to your request, as presented, is going to be extremely difficult for anyone to swallow and, when word got out about how things went down, it would set an extremely bad precedent for the other employees. I don't believe you've thought this all the way through.

Just my two cents. You'll need to keep us posted on what you ultimately decide.

Dobby

I have a bunch of guys who work for me hourly. Some are faster than others and some have better attitudes, some are better craftsman, but their wage is always in line with their characteristics.
The best guys I have are obviously the fastest, great attitude, and least amount of call backs. Their wage coincides with it. I would talk with your boss, if you do what you say you do I would not have a gripe in the world, in fact if you were on a production type job like that I would be throwing you extra money.

Quick story... I had a 8 floor high rise to do in the bronx NY early this year. Hallways of glue down carpet and base. Approx 14000 Sq Ft carpet, 4200 LF base, then vacuum and cover with self stick carpet plastic. I said to the guys do a good job, get it done quick, if you accomplish that i will throw you some extra money. 3 Guys, 1 leader, 1 installer, 1 helper, finished in 6 days. I threw the main guy 700, installer 500, and helper 200 extra for that week. Why? because they busted their ass and were on to more installs the following week making more money. Point is, your boss should have no problem compensating you for your hard, quick work.

Good luck

Re: Frustration

The first thing i have to say, do not use that self stick carpet plastic too long, in the wrong conditions, it will draw the glue to it and discolor the carpet.

Prevailing wage in NY, I think is lower than NJ, but if you have a job like that, give me a helper and tell me where to go, 1600 yards glue down hallways, with base, that is nothing for me. Unless you have a pattern match and it has some weird lay out i figure that is 2 guys (5) 8 hour days. (actually less but a safe guesstimate)

Some jobs you can't make go faster, but clean installs should not be an issue. i do not believe in wasting time, I may grab a coffee, but that is to sip, I bring a gallon of water and my own lunch that I usually eat when I get home.

I am in the middle of a 'change' with my own business and some of the sidework I had been doing, so it has put me in a holding pattern, 40 hours a week does not cut it...

Many years ago, I ran 12 guys form central CA to Red Bluff CA doing apt. complexes. (early/mid 80's). If a crew of 2 could clear $1000 per week after all expences (wages, travel expences, sundries, etc) each would get a $100 bonus. It worked for us at that time.

over 100 yds per man per day? Dang, I'd be dead.
Nice to see workers appreciated. When the boss cares, it is returned.
