Get yourself the Garmin Nuvi 680 .. They are cheap now around $400.00 on the net .. Bluetooth .. You won't be disappointed .. I have the 2720 , going to give it to a family member and get one for myself .. if you are searching for gas stations it will bring up the closet and tell you what the pump price is for that day .. Just one feature ..

GPS are the best. I lived in Florida and had a Street Pilot. That was tricky to use. Then I had a Street Pilot 2610 and that was much better. Lots of options for routes and things. Last year I bought a Garmin Nuvi for the truck. Small, easy to use touch screen. Even has a lock code that you can put in so no one else can use it if it comes up missing someday. When I hit the hill towns for work I can search for food when in unfamiliar areas. I like GPS.

PS. Here we are again, Nick. LOL

Re: gps or online mapping service

I am a huge fan of GPS, unfortunately, I have learned the hard way about keeping them tucked away. First TomTom was stolen in Newark, they popped the lock cylinder, and grabbed it. I replaced it with a TomTom one, which was very easy to use, around $440 at the time, this was stolen outside of my house, smash and grab, so I had to replace the passenger window and the GPS, I went with a cheap Garmin that works but does not have the features of the TomTom one I had.

Mapquest is good, but that is designed more for one way or round trip travel, almost useless to use it if you are working in NYC, or anywhere it is easy to miss an exit or a turn.

Re: gps or online mapping service

I have a Magellan. I got it at Christmas time. I love it, but it has taken me wrong a couple of times. Once in Milwaukee and last month when I was in Columbus, Ohio it wanted to take me to Dayton first then Toledo and home. I had to put in Toledo and pick a address and it took me right there. But before that I was all over Columbus trying to get out. It took me down there with no problem even on the same route I finally came back on.
I use mapquest as a back up except when in Columbus.
This is my first one so I don't know about the others, but hear a lot about Garmin.

Re: gps or online mapping service

I thought about getting one once, but there were too many choices; it was overwhelming. I live in a rural area, like many others here, and when I drove my brother in law around our area, I played with the GPS that he had. It did not like the short cuts and back road, anti freeway routes I take. The lady in the GPS was getting a little distrurbed, because I would not U turn, and follow directions.
Man, I heard enough of that as a kid, don't need a box grinding me too. That's what my wife is for....

I have an older eTrex. But just for hunting, in unfamiliar places. Elk hunting it is a must, and I don't know how we did it so long ago?? I think the horses knew the way back to the barn!!! Cause I know I didin't.

Re: gps or online mapping service

They did a test not to long ago with the Garmin , tom tom and another . i forget which ..
They typed in the number of a fire house around the corner .. no state .. the Garmin new one was there , the tom tom had them in a different state .. and the other would not locate anything ..
It is either the 680 or the 750 that you can mark your car , go into the mall or woods and it will bring you back to the car ..

Re: gps or online mapping service

I have the tomtom one xl, around $150 now. Easy to use, great for trips. Finds the shortest, fastest route and alternate routes. Even works as my speedometer in the old chev.

Re: gps or online mapping service

I started doing a lot of work out of town last year and got tired of being lost all the time. I picked up a Tomtom one and it made life much easier. I's not perfect though, in fact I kinda wish I had gone with a Garmin unit. I've been hearing good things about those.

I gonna be picking up an iPhone as soon as I can find one in stock around here. If the GPS is good enough in that, I will give the Tomtom to my folks.
