Safety first

Peter mentioned on another site the need to discuss safety. Lets discuss what safety equipment you use, and while we are at it lets make a first aid kit for flooring professionals. I know you can go the the store and buy one, but unless you spend big bucks they have just a few bandaids, tape, and a couple of asprin.

The Red Cross has a great list of materials for first aid kits.

1. Safety equipment: A. ear plugs, B.

2. First aid kit: A. Bottled water (not for drinking--for cleaning wound) B.

I don't know how sanitary it is, but if I want to keep working after a cut then duck tape is the only thing that will allow it.

But keeping tetanus shots up to date is important.
Eye protection (because we all know we wear them when we put down strip)
Poison control phone # handy.
Memorize the number for 911.

I'll call directory assestance for the 911 number
In the first aid kit rubber gloves, sanatary tape, burn ointment, gause, big bandages, band aids, tweasers, large strips of an old sheet.

Re: Safety first

Some jobsites we are required to wear long pants, work boots, long sleeve shirts, hard hats, and saftey glasses. As far as first aid, duct tape and peroxide. When I saw Safety First as the thread title I assumed it would be about safety on the jobsite. Using caution tape, keeping tools and materials out of walkways on the job, keeping areas well ventilated using certain adhesives, etc

Re: Safety first

If I get a bad cut that needs bandaged for more than a day, I'll use a bandage and then wrap it in duct tape to keep it on. Regular bandaids don't have much staying power when you're working and sweating. For most run of the mill, day to day cuts, I'm a duct tape guy.

Re: Safety first

I think the Kevalar gloves[cut proof] would be a good add on.
CFI dressed a guy that would be OSHA approved and he couldn't hardly move.
Has anybody mentioned knee pads yet? Having had 4 knee surguries I don't leave home without them.

Re: Safety first

If i carve myself with a chunk of tile I usually just wrap it in kleenex and some green masking tape and keep on going, unless it's a bad one and I've had a few of those. As far as knee pads go, I've been wearing two pairs for about 8 years now and am down to working about 5-6 hours a day. I don't think I could even make three hours with only one pair on now. As Mick said, "What a drag it is getting old".

Re: Safety first

You'd be surprised how many people call their local law enforcement to ask for the number for 911.

I keep some liquid bandage on hand for cuts. You have to get it to stop bleeding first, but once you do, the liquid bandage seals it off and keeps everything out.

Re: Safety first

There was a story on the news, where a guy called 911 because Subway forgot to put the sauce on his Spicy Italian sandwich.

Re: Safety first

Athletic tape works well for wrapping over a bandage. How about a tube of triple antibiotic ointment.
