Wow! I own that much in tools

As I read the posts about your work vehicles, I am amazed at the inventory of tools that true professionals haul around to do the job right.

You guys have some big bucks tied up . Have you laid all of your tools out to take pictures of them for insurance purposes? If not you should. It is much easier to identify what you have if (heaven forbid) a fire or theft. Be sure and include little things such as tapes, containers, supplies, etc.

I think how much you have in dollar amount is your personal business, but I sure would enjoy seeing pictures of the tool inventory, or if no pictures just a list.

Re: Wow! I own that much in tools

To much to list. Since I install carpet, vinyl, linoleum, heat welding, vct, wood floors, laminate floors. I don't do much ceramic but I do have two wet saws. Way to much to list. And I do not carry it all in the van. If I am doing vinyl on a particular day tose tools go on and carpet of wood tools come off or what ever I was doing the day before. Some days I have to carry multiples as I may be installing carpet and vinyl or carpet and wood or laminate.

Re: Wow! I own that much in tools

I forgot about wall trimmers, I have a 75lb roller, I did have a wetsaw, but that disappeared years ago, but I have access to my bosses (I don't do much ceramic, if any) I also left out socket sets, the obvious assortment of carpet knives and utility knives. Carpet pullers for rip out, stand up scraper and hand scrapers. I know I have a pipe cutting tool I used for brass rods, also a remington nail gun, trigger activated. I know I will be adding to this several more times, I have tools I haven't used in years, I even have a few things in one of my older tool boxes, I don't even know what I used them for, or what they are called. Left out the most important tools, Pro-knees, and 2-3 other pairs of knee pads.

...let's just suffice it to say that I got so many tools that my airplane hangar is full up, with just an outline of my plane in the middle where my bird can squeeze into......I might nave to get rid of some tools to have room fer my new plane in a couple months, cause it is bigger...

My list would be 3 or 4 times that long. And yes I do use every tool at least once a year.

Re: Wow! I own that much in tools

We have at least two of every tool we need, have a general storage bin full of stuff from trowels to staplers to contact tape to the freaking radio, we also have room for 2-3 boxes of tackless and can still load a huge job. Sounds like you have an archive stored in a shed or have just kept stuff that you no longer use.

The guy with the most toys at the end of the game doesn't necessarily win. It's whatcha did while you were here that counts.

In a mood, Jim, I'm not trashing anybody. Dave

No offense taken at all. I have duplicates of many of my tools. I have mostly a full range of carpet tools, hardwood installation tools, vinyl tools, heatwelding tools, a moderate range of tile tools, various pneumatic nailers, floor sanders, laminate tools (both floor and countertop), not to mention all the hand tools. Then are the cameras, meters, scales, etc. It adds up (30 years worth) and the list gets really long.

I have never been 'tool poor'

Re: Wow! I own that much in tools

A lot of the larger tools I store in a shed, some at the warehouse, I spray paint most of my tools with blue paint to avoid confusion. Usually, when I deliver material I will pull everything but what I need to do the job off of the truck.

Dee: A few years ago we helped out friends with a carpet store in cottage country. The bane of our existence was "island jobs". We had to load the truck, drive to a marina, load everything on a barge and could even be another hour from the job site by water.

Damn, had to make sure NOTHING was forgotten for the site. Wasn't worth the extra buck a yard.
