I used to install some sheet vinyl, that gave me a pretty good rash. Think it had more to do with what was in the backing, a few cheap carpets give an allergic reaction as well, but only topical. The worst of it is when we do nasty rip ups, when you are getting exposed to decades of who knows what. My dad did know a guy that had a long term plan of working with contact cement without any ventilation, not too bright and his disability claim got shot down.
As far as allergies in general go, I am allergic to nickel and a few other things, most of these allergies aren't genetic and can happen from exposure in certain conditions. I am not going to dismiss anyone's trade related health problems, but if there was a real problem with the materials like VAT, or select products, I really believe we would see a greater sample of afflicted installers.
Not to beat a dead horse to death, if you can quit smoking, that will ease your supsecptability to other allergins and health problems. Merely because you will have more oxygen in your blood and your immune system will function properly.
Dust masks are always a good idea, reading the MSDS on adhesives and other installation products can only help, etc, etc.
