Re: health....

Seems the references used are quite old, and when I saw the Anderson report was used as fact, I say it is someone wanting their 30 seconds of fame.

Re: health....

It appears the article was written in 1995. I have spoken with many people for many years about carpet's contribution to IAQ and emission toxicity.

The article is, from my knowledge, inaccurate. Contrary to her statement, No government or certified private lab has ever been able to duplicate Anderson's findings. I further found it very interesting she (the article author) listed caprolactam as a hazardous chemical. All type 6 nylon is made from it. Type 6 is by far the predominant nylon used in clothing. I would suspect this would cause a far outcry at the apparel industry than singling out the carpet industry.

IMHO, the article is based on Voodoo science.

I should have waited for your post Peter. You said it much better than I and I agree with you 100%. Do you think Cary Mitchel would accept this as fact?

Re: health....

About '92-'93, a number of us were handling a product from Peerless/Barrymore (since swallowed up by Beaulieu) called Avon. It was a 32oz poly saxony popular with builders. Nine of us got sick off the product, all at separate times, but it was always the same carpet. One installer gave up working with carpet and has just done vinyl since, and we heard that he was trying to start a class action lawsuit over it. Symptoms included nausea, vomiting, chills, fever, muscle aches. Hit us both on separate occasions, took us out for the balance of the day, we both refused to work with it again.

We routinely have the congestion problem, get into the truck; and our truck is clean, swept out daily and the dashboard wiped off, noses start to run and we're spitting up phlegm over the course of the day. We are only grateful that we handle enough variation of product that we may only handle carpet twice a week. We seldom do commercial work, so we are not working with multi on a daily basis. If we happen upon a really dirty job site, we wear masks (the last nasty was so bad Deb lost her voice for about 10 days). I enjoyed the quiet, actually.

But, we never get colds, which mystifies us.

I am gonna run after I say this!!!

You both smoke (primary and secondary smoke) 14-16 hours a day seven days a week, right?

You only handle carpet twice a week (see above).

NOW, which should I blame my congestion and phlegm on?

Why the carpet of course, Duh!

Re: health....

Does this mean, after I die, my ashes will be declared toxic waste? simply because I installed carpet.

No because you smoked and were a member of TFP!

No, smoking is one bad habit I don't have. Probably the only one.

Roger,
Don't duck and run, remember they are trying to (no they ARE) quitting smoking along with CP and others.
You are only pointing out supporting data that they may have overlooked, to encourage them to continue their quest for a longer and more healthy career and life.

Re: health....

I would say their is some truth to carpet causing issues. Anyone can have or develop allergic reactions to different things. What affects one person may not affect another.

Only YOU know what is affecting you and if you can identify the trigger and can avoid it good for you.

I know that when I work with carpet there is something in the stuff that my body doesn't like. Not enough for me to stop but definitely some reaction happens. Usually stuffy sinuses and sometimes some itching.

PS I don't smoke.

Is that the clothing or the carpets?
