Everyone has to evaluate the jobs they are on, and the expectations of the customer. If you show up blind to do 5K feet of VCT and you decide the floor needs a self levelling system, 2 skim coats and sanding, you going to get that money after the fact? Is that the right way everytime?
Is that the right way? YES.
You're just too chicken shit to hear them say no.

Give me the proper paperwork and I'll lay right over it boss!!!

I love to "just say no" when they want to get in a pissing contest over a sloppy concrete job they're looking to put hard surface on. I especially enjoy the dumbfounded look on everyone's face when I laugh at them, pack my tools and go home.

They're REALLY not used to that.

Same kind of deal with power stretching or kicking. I won't kick anything over 10-12' if I'm running the work because I need to use my kneecaps tomorrow and I'm not all that skilled with the kicker. But if YOU are running the job and ask me to boot in a couple or three 15'x15' offices I'm here to please. Thank you sir, may I have another.

So for yourself you won't kick because it will damage YOUR knees, but for someone else you will damage YOUR knees? That is awful strange to me.

I'll do it your way if you're running the job or if you're the shop owner and ask me to do things a certain way. I don't think I could do much better with the kicker than I can with the power stretcher and if it's any sizable area I'm going to beg off the job. But a couple small rooms is nothing to boot in. Why argue about it? I'll do my best and if doesn't hold up over time we'll all know why.

Re: stretchers

If I said mills do not require retailers/installers who buy goods from them to power stretch each job, would I be correct or incorrect?

It depends on how you define require.

If you want a written "requirement" or blanket statement from them that it is absolutely required, you will not get it.

BUT, if it is not power stretched, and there is a wrinkling or warrenty issue, they will decline the claim. Go figure!!

I figured that RG. What's stopping carpet installers from banding together and having that changed?

Re: stretchers

The way I understand it. Mills do not warrentee installation, However if the carpet is not proffessionally installed they will not warrentee any part of it. In other words, if the mills do not believe the carpet has the proper stretch they can walk away from whatever issue that might occur. If you have bionic knees congratulations, but you can not undre any circumstances work along side me if you don't power stretch. I am saying this believing anyone who would take the time to read my dribble is good enough to get the job done.

Re: stretchers

If you are looking for requirements. Check out the CRI 104-105.

Carpet installers have NO standing in the industry!! Who would you turn to to change it? CFI? CRI? While both are worthwhile organizations, they cannot affect the kind of change you are talking about.
Inspectors are not much better. The mfgs are happy to have inspectors as long as they support the manufacturers, but send in a claim pointing the finger at the manufacturing process. You will hear the screaming begin, not all but many, particularly if the claim is a large one. A good inspector will double and triple check his facts if it is deemed mfg.

Installers are considered a "necessary evil." If they could, the mills would change all products to be DIY.

Disagree Roger: From CRI 105
7.5 Power stretching – Carpet must be properly power stretched and firmly hooked onto the tackstrip in accordance with the seven-step procedure described in Figure 1. The use of a power stretcher is mandatory.

And in the foreword:
Failure to follow this standard for installation shall not be the basis for rejecting a claim relating to a manufacturing defect, unless the failure to do so contributed to or caused the defect.

Some truth here, but guess what they think about inspectors? I don't think I have ever gotten a from a manufacturer
