Re: stretchers

Just as T said, I meant an acknowledgment of an inspection done well. We all like to know we are loved and valued and irreplaceable and...

Must have watched too much of the memorial yesterday...

Peter!!!! You need to get out of the house and do more work. You are spending too much time with the lady and she is filling your head with nonsense. I think it is called getting spoiled!!

If I said mills do not require retailers/installers who buy goods from them to power stretch each job, would I be correct or incorrect?
You would be correct Jerry.

Why? Because there is no definitive test to say that a carpet has or hasn't been stretched much less properly stretched.

There can be indications that a strtech has been applied ie. tiger tracks on the backing or stretcher or knee kicker damage to the face yarns but again their presence does not mean it has been done properly.

No test, no requirement.

Re: stretchers

Are you sure? I thought the mills sponsored the CRI 104-105. It clearly states that the use of a power stretcher is mandatory. I have had customers who buy their carpet online hand me a copy downloaded from the internet when I was measuring.

Re: stretchers

Stullis, we will always disagree about determining if a stretcher was used, but you are 100% correct in that it cannot be determined if the specified 1-1 1/2% stretch was obtained. I have also never met or employed a mechanic who knows the size of the room and has calculated how much carpet will have to be trimmed off for proper stretching. It has always been a "feel" process.

Daris & Roland: What does CFI say about how to know when the proper amount of stretch has been applied?

Re: stretchers

"Net" won't work in old houses around here. Many are 3-4 inches out of square.

Re: stretchers

CFI~at trainings we say the 1-1 1/2 %.
Personally I know a lot of the time it isn't going to happen. I go by feel mostly. I have done the chalk line thing and marked out the percentages and some times you make it sometimes you don't, sometimes you go way beyond without a problem. Basically when it wants to stop stretching I quit.
Each piece is different, even sometimes off the same roll.

Daris

Daris, I knew that was how you would reply! I agree with you but it takes a while to get that feel. I also glad you have documented, albeit maybe not in a "lab" environment, the vagaries of stretching.

But think of the mill denials that could be short circuited if the installer comes back with:" The cut was 10', I stretched 3/4" and felt the backing would tear if any more was put on it." or, "The cut was 25' and I stretched 4 1/2 inches, but it was still as loose as my Grandma's nylons, so I got two more inches out of it." Written down with a time and date...

Just some food for thought... and I know how much installers love paperwork...

Here, it is just the opposite.

The old homes are solid and square with straight walls, it is the new fast paced homes built in the last 20 years, that are the worst.

Re: stretchers

Did one where a 10' countertop touched the wall on both ends and there was a 4" gap in the middle. $250,000 house. New construction.

CRI 104-105 are guidelines of recommended installation methods. The industry has twisted them into mandatory requirements even though most of it is speculation whether CRI guidleines have been followed.

Peter they would use that documentation against you.

Installers are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
