Don't remember who was the collector but seen these on e-bay Collection of Antique Carpet Layers Tools/Turn Of Cent. - eBay (item 350320416546 end time Mar-01-10 11:56:25 PST). Not a bad price and no bids. Just thought I'd throw that out there!

What was that plate looking thing with the wire used for? That handled multi spike tool you can still get.

Kw the plate thing is the stretcher itself with the long handled thing along side of it.

So you spike the handle into the floor, slip the plate wire over, stand on the plate and push the handle away from you?

I don't think they stood on the plate but kneeled on it as the one I have is padded. But other than that I think that is how it was used. Then they tacked it down to be taken up later to be cleaned by beating the carpet with a rug beater and maybe scrubbing with brush and water.

think i'll stay with my modern day/20th century stretcher as with my internal combustion engine powered van with pneumatic tires
