Covering up face nails holes

Ok, now that my floor is in. I have some detailing to do. One such item is to fill in the face nail holes along a couple walls.

I tried getting some stainable wood filler. This worked out nice but only in some areas where the stain I have exactly matched up with that spot on the wood. I am thinking of getting a couple different colors of stain to try and match the color better.

So I ask, what other things could I be doing to cover up those face nails.

....I used 6d or sometimes 8d finishing nails

Wax sticks come in many colors and have some gloss to their appearance. Find them by color putty in many hardware stores and home centers.

I use mainly Woodwise, Minwax and Bruce fillers. All work good and view them from a standing position. You will never notice them.

Minwax is what is in those little jars i get at HD .. they have a sealed foiled cap on them that i only remove part way , and fold it back when done to help keep it from drying out .. if anyone can see it from a standing position , they should be able to tell if you are wearing clean underwear ..

A trick I learned at the NOFMA installation school is to use painters putty (not window glazing) with a little whitting and universal tints to exactlly match the color. All of these productsd can be purchased at a good paint supplier. Mix very little whitting with the putty. I believe the whitting is to dry the putty faster or harder.

Search out this stuff. It dries hard, and it's in a squeeze tube, you can cut an angle in the snout of the tube to get a 1/16" hole. Neato stuff. Our True Value hardware store has it next to the wood fillers.
This is water based. Waxy type fillers leave a shiny spot where you buff the excess off......... with this, you almost have virtualy zero waste because the application is so precise, you hardly apply any excess.
Try to find some if you can..... I think you will like it a lot.

If you fill it and it doesn't look right, stain pens work good.
