Hard wood floor in kitchen

When my parents built this house, they put hard wood floors everywhere except the bathrooms - even the kitchen. Now, 35 years later the kitchen floor has water damage, is warped and generally a mess. I'm thinking about putting ceremic tile in there. Is that a project my husband and I can do? What would be the steps to follow? I may eventually want to continue the tile to the entrance hall and the dining room. Does that need to be done all at once?

Yes, that can certainly be done. The first step would be to make certain that your floor will support a tile floor. If you can give us your joist structure numbers, (size, unsupported span, spacing,condition, subflooring type and size, etc.) you will be well on your way.
Can these areas be done at separate times? Certainly, with proper planning.
Can you do it yourself? Most definitely! You may even get a certain amount of satisfaction out of it, along with a health dose of respect for the pros that do this every day.
