Exclamation Borders w/different species

Hello, I am planing on installing Mayan Kona, 3 1/4" wide and random lengths that is prefinnished and thought of running a border around the entire perimeter first, with possible another spieces of wood. There will be only one 45 deg. run seperating the living room- carpet- and the kitchen and nook.
How bout the 45 deg. with no tounge and grove, cut it tight and glue? or just nail it? This is over 1 1/8" subfloor with TJIs 24" on center.

I looked at your profile, to see where you are located, but no info there. I don't know what species Mayan Kona is, but I've had no problem with borders on properly acclimated wood.

You didn't mention if it was solid or engineered either. I don't like not having my corners splined, I think it is necessary, and it won't add to much time for the job. Its easy. You don't have to match the depth to any existing groove, and you can use most any slot cutter you have. I cut my spline out of oak; still have a bit of sq. edge 5/16" that works perfect.
