prefinished hardwood on diagonal
Hello,
I am brand new to this forum and very impressed with the information provided.
Here is my question:
I have just purchased enough pre-finshed hardwood to do all of the second floor of my house. My plan is to lay on the diagonal. I have 4 bedrooms, a hallway and a "catwalk" (over the entrance hall). I would like to lay this without any thresholds, going diagonal all over the second floor without interruptions.
What is your advice?
Start on the "catwalk", a relatively small area (12 x 4 ) or in one of the bedrooms?
I am aware of the importance of keeping a precise 45 degree angle.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sabine

First, welcome to TFP!
It will be hard to give advice unless we have some info. Would you be able to post a diagram of your room layout? Also what type of subfloor, type of wood, do you have any flooring skills?
General information would be good. Others will chime in, give them a little time.

Re: prefinished hardwood on diagonal
Hi,
Thanks for the quick response.
Not sure how to do up a diagram, but for the other questions please note:
The house is 18 years old and has decent plywood sub-floors. We know since last winter we did all of the first floor. (Lay out with borders and mitre cuts).
The material is 3 1/4 " wide 3/4" thick pre-finished oak
If the lay out becomes an issue, I will try to figure out how do submit a diagram.
We are relatively new at flooring, but our main floor looks like a "million bucks", mainly because my husband is extremely patient and very "picky".
Thanks
Sabine

Easiest way would be to use M$ paint and draw it up ruffly. Doesn't have to be exact, just so we know what it looks like. Save the pic, then post it on here.

Re: prefinished hardwood on diagonal
I'm not sure it really matters where he starts. If any of the bedroom door doors are opposite from each other he will be working in two rooms at once. Your husband needs to give himself a little more time laying a diagonal because each row must be blind nailed at the ends with a finish nailer because a stapler or cleat nailer can't get close enough. Also running under doorways are problematic on a diagonal.... frequently he may have to dry lay those rows and shove them up out of the way because if you nail all the way up to the door that last row may not go in.
Try to put up a layout.
