Quick Question RE Hardwood Installation

Hi -

Still doing some research on installing the floor. I was listening to an online demo on laying a floor - and this one site suggested starting in the middle and then putting the groove to groove with a piece of tongue/molding in there to hole it and laying the floor in opposite directions towards the wall. I think it said that this was beneficial for expansion??

Is this true - is this something we should consider - it said for rooms over 13-14' W, Ours is around 12+

This molding/slip-tongue will also be needed for us when doing our transition pieces - there will be some spots that need the tongue to fit into the transitions. Where do I buy them - is it just molding?? Any suggestions on sizes?

Thanks...
Ruth

Re: Quick Question RE Hardwood Installation

Because of the angle of the fastener, the wood pushes against the path of least resistance. Splitting it with a spline/slip-tongue, makes the expansion force happen in opposite directions from the center. It helps, but is not the save all.

Re: Quick Question RE Hardwood Installation

Supposedly it helps somewhat on floors that are fastened down..... it would nothing for a glued down installation. Also if you go that route you will now have two end walls to deal with as opposed to just one.
