Where to start laying laminate

We are wanting to know where to start laying laminate in a room?
Should we start on the wall across from the door? If so which side?

I've read to start left to right which is subjective to which direction you are facing. Do they mean if you are standing in the doorway the opposite left side?

Also the instruction say to trim the laminate with a plane under the doorway. What purpose does this serve?

It depends on the laminate manufacturer. What do the directions tell you.
Usually it with the grooves against the wall.

I would choose the longest, straightest wall to start on.

You indicated in a previous thread that you were using the Bruce Lock & Fold product. You will want to start the installation on the left end of your starting wall as you face it.

You may need to trim off the lower ledge of the groove side of the board you put in the doorway. You can't lift and insert that piece because the ends should be under the door casing (you should undercut casings and jambs to give the job a professional look). Plane off the ledge and use glue to hold the adjoining pieces to it.

I've read that it's best to follow the manufacturer's recommendation. Whatever is comfortable for you is really the best way. Also, be sure to install the laminate parallel to incoming light sources, or parallel to the longest wall in narrow rooms.
