They had 1/4" back then? Is it engineered or solid? In my opinion, definitely glue it. Don't give it the opportunity to move much. Put down a multiply underlayment and glue it.

I'd install it just like it originally was, using spiral cut nails, to match the rest of your house.
The floor will need to be filled to cover any open nail holes.
According to you and CP, my advice was not so good. So, if me and FlooringGirl were wrong about the glue, please tell us why so we can learn. It's a good thing I wasn't presented with a project like this when I was working. I'da screwed it up royal.

I'm just gonna say that from recent past experience, you cannot staple such a thin piece, as the tounge on 1/4" is too small and will break. You will get too much movement otherwise, and therefore will have a problem. I'm still surprised on 1/4" in 1940??

I am so confused- 1940, no tongue and/or groove????? The only 1/4" I see these days is to float or glue, but yet with tongue and groove.

That type of floor was common back then. Imo, it's not worth the hassel.

There was no tongue & grouve on them back then . That is why they face nailed them with what i would call tacks .

you can still get the wood at lumber yards around here .

.........Floorgirl and me...................... well fer starters, what size trowel are ya gonna use on a 1/4" slat floor with no tongue and groove.....and secound, do ya know what adhesives do to wood that is aged and dried out.........if ya could keep the adhesive off the surface while ya weighted the whole durn floor down fer 9 weeks, ya might get it to work..............but my money is on the other outcome........

I am schooled, I just choose to ignore proper grammar "some a the time."

And, it's "FloorGirl and I."
