Cutting Pergo floors?

We're about to buy a house that has pergo floors (I believe just snap-in type with no adhesive, but not sure), but we want carpet in the living room, so we're going to have to cut the pergo floor so we can remove the living room pieces. What's the best way to do this?

Thanks!!

I would take up everything up to the last piece, it being the one you wanted to cut. Mark the piece where you want the carpet to start, the carefully remove it and cut it on the table saw. You'll need to install an end cap (can't remember the technical name for those things) over the end that will allow for expansion. The carpet will butt up to the end cap.

Of course, all of the above is figuring that you're cutting the board length-wise.

If you're cutting along the width of the board, I would probably mask it off with several rows of masking tape to protect the floor that you're keeping, and to keep it from chipping, then cut it with a circular saw set to the proper depth. There may be a better way of cutting it along the width that someone else can chime in about, that's the only way I would know of doing it. You'll still need the end cap either way.

Thanks for the reply, helps out a lot. And yes, it will be cutting across the width of several boards. :/

You can do it as above, or cut it in place with a thin kurf circular saw. Simply set the blade depth to the thickness of the flooring material. Drop a line or use a straight edge and pencil to mark the cut off. You will have to finish the ends of the cut by hand on a table saw or jig saw.
As stated, you will need an end cap from Pergo. You can get them at any home depot. Just remember to allow 1/4 gap for expansion between the end cap and the cut floor.
What you are going to need is called a Carpet Transition Strip. It will be coded 331XX etc....

The Exakt saw if you guy's get the tool over there is the easiest way it is like a miniture circular saw draw a line set the depth and cut away. or the fein multimaster could also do the job.

The best tool to do this job is a toe kick saw.
