Laminate creaking?

On a new floating laminate install, when I walk is a little creaking (not everywhere) natural as things set?

(Yes, the floor was grinded level)

Re: Laminate creaking?

Sounds like the planks are locked in somewhere in line with the creaks. The creaking is the result of the planks moving up and down (peaking).

Re: Laminate creaking?

Harlan, is the subfloor concrete? You say ground not sanded which indicates it is. If this is the case, it was not ground level. As Tandy said, creaking if the result of up/down movement and the planks rubbing.

If the substrate is wood, the deflection may be in the floor, the subfloor or both. If underlayment pad was not used (I have never seen it omitted though), it might be the planks rubbing on the subfloor.

take off some of the base boards around where you hear the sound. If the floor is tight next to anything chissel away some of the laminate so it is about a 1/4 in short of the wall.

Re: Laminate creaking?

Is this creaking over the cracked area that you spoke of in another thread or is this in a different area? It may be as easy as pulling some base and cutting it back as some have suggested but if this is a new install you may want to have the installer take a look.

Re: Laminate creaking?

It could be debris in the joints.
Sometimes happens during installation.

Not as easy to fix as an area that is locked in.
Should ask your installer to come back to take a look.

This is over concrete. I can go step over an place that creaked once, then it's not there when I go back over it again. It's kind of random throughout. That's why I was wondering if there's some type of settling involved

It is also a sign of poor quality laminate or bad manufacturing.

It may be some debris left on top of the pad and under the flooring. We hear squeeks in rebond under carpet often, maybe a type of rebond ulay?

Sounds to me that it could be you have area's that are not flat. That would give you up and down movement and cause noise.

Re: Laminate creaking?

Harlan, In an ideal world the subfloors would be perfectly flat, manufacturing tolerances would be a solid zero and laminate flooring would not creak. In the real world the subfloors will not be perfectly flat and manufacturers knowing this set a limit - usually 1/8" within any given 6' span. Board specifics can vary by a slight amount. Now this will pretty much keep movement and creaking to a minimum but do not expect a floating laminate floor to make no noise what-so-ever. You stated that there was a little creaking. This is a judgement call. Do you think the creaking is excessive?
