Made a mistake need some help

Hey everyone I came across this site while searching for a fix to an error on my part. I'm not a pro installer thats for sure, just an avid DIY'er who has installed a few floors in the past.

Anyways my mistake is I went to lumber liquidators this time for my latest flooring project in my condo (2nd floor concrete subfloor) and purchased a Schon 3/8" Brazilian Teak engineered floor. Had the first room all prepped to go and guess what the wood is warped and cupped right out of the box. Call LL and they tell me not to install it and bring it back. 13 of the 35 boxes were no good. They inspect and agree to take it back, exchange only. Won't return my money. I actually used their in store financing for 12 months interest free, but they won't credit it back. I just want to get away from this place but what I'm starting to find out is because their refund policy is clearly stated I'm kinda stuck having to purchase from them or so I'm being told. Sucks that I have to spend $4300 at a store that I don't want to.

Anyways back on track, if I have to buy from them does anyone have any suggestions about products that they have used that are alright or that I should avoid all together. I'm extremely leery of the Schon brand now because of this experience. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Bill

I'm not an installer or lawyer for that matter, but I would have to believe if they supplied defective materials they void the contract. I would insist on a refund on that basis. Your local BBB or state consumer affairs department might prove helpful.

Talked to a couple lawyers and maybe its just a Wisconsin thing but they all said the same thing. "if the return policy is clearly stated thats what you get" and LL policy is exchange only. The guy even gave me somewhat of a hard time about it at first like I was supposed to thank him for taking it back. The place is a total joke I paid for delivery to my place but when it came to returning it I had to haul it back there myself. Where is that $150 that I paid for delivery? Never see that money again.

Unfortunately, freight or delivery charges are almost never reimbursed in any business. I have gotten flawed product from computer, clothing and miscellaneos other companies and have always had to pay the freight to do the exchanges. And exchanges without refunds is not that uncommon either. In fact, that's how I structure advertising on TFP too. Advertisers pay me for ad space and can postpone, cancle or change ads all they want, but there are no refunds. Only new ads, new locations or adjustments in ad scheduling.

I hope that Lumber Liquidators will help you get good replacement material or allow you to select a different product. Please keep us informed.

You can. Your website isn't a TFP advertiser, which is what I was talking about. But even advertisers can cancel. They just don't get money back. The main reason for that is the internet archiving system. You can still see old websites - and their ads - even years after they have been closed. Spiders crawl sites and archive the content daily, so it's always available somewhere. Websites can be canceled, transferred or even temporarily closed, but it's the same deal with them.

Yeah they basically gave me store credit so I can now purchase whatever I want to. I had their Schon Engineered line but I'm nervous about a different floor from that line maybe Bellawood? Haven't heard great things about that though.

Steer clear of Bellawood. Complete rubbish..way too high a gloss and milled like crap..plus its a thin solid and not a good idea for a glue down. Your in a crappy situation as the brands they carry are all kinda problematic. Virginia millworks isnt bad but I think its all 3/4" solid..take a look at what they have online as they can ship it to your local store. see if they happen to have any name brand hardwood and post it here for some opinions on the brand.

Re: Made a mistake need some help

Well after all this time I finally got it worked out. The credit card company sided with LL and would not get my money back, so I had decided I was going to small claims court. I decided I would call LL 1-800 # one last time to try and work it out. The lady I got asked if I had called them at all about my problem and I told her yes that was the first thing I did but was told by the 800# customer service rep that first day "its the stores decision there is nothing we can do for you" she placed me on hold and after 10 minutes came back on and said would I like a check or the money credited back to the account. I told her the account credit would be fantastic and it happened. I don't understand why these companies can't do the right thing in the first place, but I am very appreciative of this ladies help.

So now that this is worked out anyone have any suggestions for what I should put in my upper condo unit. 2nd floor unit concrete subfloors. I'm thinking Kahrs as I have checked out their samples and they seem really great. I will be doing a float job on this.
