Floor Prep. Questions

I am new to this forum and have a few questions surrounding an upcoming instal. I will be installing 800sqft, of 3/4' x 4 3/4 plank oak and would appreciate any experienced insight.

Some background on the subfloor. I have 19/32 OSB covered by 1/8 luan throughout entry, kitchen and d.room. In the kitchen I also have vinyl.

Here are a few questions.....

1)should i be concerned about the height diff. where vinyl meets luan? seems to be about an 1/8" difference when I go from entry into kitchen.

2) Ok to install directly over vinyl? I have reviewed several posts and they seem to vary in opinons.

3) manufacture recommends at least 3/4" subfloor.... Does it matter if I have that thickness between subfloor and luan?

thanks

Hook, sounds like he is planning on nail down.
I would take vinyl up and then level the floor. Unless you are planing on a turn board or t moulding at the spot that is not the same level, even 1/8 inch could show.

1) You should be concerned.

2) Best to remove vinyl and luan.

3) If the manufacturer wants at least 3/4" you should add some underlayment. Additional 1/2" ply would be good. Luan doesn't do much for additional holding power if nailing.

Thanks for the quick response. I will keep you posted on my progress. It Could be a mess to rip up luan and vinyl but it is the right choice! Rather do it now vs. tearing it back up once I complete my kitchen. I would imagine your hardwood floor is only as good as your subfloor. Thanks again. You guys are a "Great Resource" to have. Keep up the good work!

hey stullis..........is there and advantage to gluing and screwing 1/2" or just screw it down. Also, should I leave an 1/8" gap for expansion? Finally, what's the best underlayment (aquabar, 15lb., risen etc)

Just screw it down. I like Aquabar personally.
