Particleboard began life somewhere around the end of WWII because there just wasn't enough plywood to go around. It evolved into the product that is favored by most building contractors and many flooring professionals too. CP has some very valid points. It's use is a hotly debated topic among pros. With proper precautions, it can be an effective underlayment. That is usually not the case, however.
I've seen the stuff deteriorate to the level of sawdust over time. I prefer quality materials and construction methods and quality care afterward. It'd also be nice if manufacturer's made better and safer home appliances and other products. Because so few homes and commercial buildings fall into these categories, there will likely be problems like what CP indicated with water damage, etc. That's prob'ly why the debate rages on so.
Still, I prefer the use of plywood and most flooring manufacturers recommend it instead of particleboard. There is an interesting Wikipedia piece on particleboard you might like. There's also one on plywood.
Thanks, KWFloors, for bringing up Halex. That's a product that is mentioned more and more. They make the popular Multiply Floor Underlayment and other underlayment panels. Tecply is a different product made by Plywood & Door Manufacturers Corporation.
Do any of you use other products we should know about? This is turning into an interesting topic. Thanks for the participation. Even you, CP.

I have been trying to find Halex in the NY city area for 7 months now! It's kinda like the unicorn, it doesn't exist! I have spent countless hours on the internet looking for it also, to no avail. I found 3 places that have it, in missouri, california and Virginia, and the shipping would cost me over $100 extra for about 180sf in each case. I ain't made of money, as the saying goes!
The website for the company has no references as to where to get it, which really astounds me. Don't they want to sell it?? I sent them an email and it went unanswered (I guess they don't want to bother with a homeowner). I have called every lumber yard in all 5 boroughs of NYC, really!, NOBODY has it!
The best product in the world ain't worth jack if you can't find it!
Now I have to go use some inferior product, simply because I can actually get it. I really hate that!

Re: Looking for Halex
Try "Matrix". It is equivilent to Halex. I'm told that several years ago one of the original partners left and there was a clause in the contract that he could not compete for 'x' amount of time. That time is up and he is making the same product, (5 ply Russian birch).
Here in Boise it runs about 34 dollars for a 4X8. Halex is 36 and change.

Re: Looking for Halex
The parent company, Belknap White Alcco website ( Belknap White Alcco | Homepage) lists this for contact information:
Carpet Products, Inc.
12 Commercial Rd. Albany, NY 12205
Manager: Bob Blatt
Phone: 518-489-3290
I don't know if their info is more current, or Don's is. Don lives in NY, so he may have a better source for current info.

Re: Looking for Halex
I will give them a call tomorrow, but Halabian is one of the worst distributors to deal with, for the most part the only reason we buy anything from them is because there is no one else around that carries Ardex. True Story, 6 months ago I sold an 1100 SF VCT job, I picked up the material from them, and said since I am here can I buy some 430 from you guys? I could not get a straight answer from them on a price.
