Where to buy low pin strip?

I have a job coming up of some of the thinnest carpet i have ever seen. Thinner than flat-weave even and nearly $200 a yard. I cant get anything other than standard strip around here from any of the suppliers, and special ordering anything through them can literally take month's.

Is there any place that sells it on line?

Yikes! That stuff better have a gold secondary backing! Or at least last the life of the customer.

Sorry I can't help with the tack strip situation.

Always thought that stuff was an urban legend. Never been available anywhere that I worked.

Sounds like a wool-silk blend. If so, be careful you don't scorch it with your iron if you heat tape it!

I too am unable to help out with a source for the tackless. Maybe an old school turn and tack?

Hi Darren,

Call Halex (Sharon is very helpful ) @ 909-622-3537 I actual bought aluminum tkls. last time, I believe it's the smallest size pin out their, although the last box I got seemed to be higher than the older box from probably 2 years ago. Also,Hopefully they still manufacture the "J " pin wood tkls. That's the most popular one for high end thin goods.

Note: you may need to install a thin material on top of the "J" pin tkls. at the highly visible walls and doorways to prevent pin exposure. Sound like a challenging and Fun Job, enjoy

~Mike

maybe a rush job through Halex directly? Hey, if they are going to pay over $20/sf for fabric they would probably spring for the correct tackstrip.

Most suppliers can get it for you, but they also want you to buy a skid of it because there is no call for it.
You can use binding tape duct tape, the selvege edge of carpet to help reduce the pin height . I have even used some very thin vinyl.
The vinyl I put it on the strip and pounded it down with a rubber mallet. I also cut it big enough to overlap the pad. Sure made for a nice transition between the two.

Several carpets in the 200+ range have no secondary backing. Some look like horse blankets.

Yeah, was thinking more along the lines of where the return on your investment of $200 a yard carpet is going to be.

I would really like to see some of the luxury carpets, especially if the look like horse blankets.

With the added monetary risk involved, I would hope the labor paid has increased in kind.

I googled the aluminum strip, that looks like the ticket. I guess I need to look in to that.

The carpet is made by Ruckstuhl. Yeah, I've never heard of them either. It's imported from Switzerland. I installed another piece of theirs in an office in the same house. It cost over $200 a yard. It was a blue berber with white frieze like yarn in between the rows. I've never seen anything like it. It looked great in this very contemporary house though. It was a beautiful piece of material to work with. I dont have a pic of the thin stuff.

I charged the man plenty. He shouldn't have started the conversation with how he wanted he best installer around no matter the cost and heard it was me . I don't even know where he got my name, he said it was from a contractor, but I'd never heard of him. The job is in Chapel Hill, 90 min from here. I made some area rugs for a house down there last year, but that's the only time I've been there.

I bid it high because I didn't know what I was getting in to with the material. The office was 40 yds with a seam and 5 steps. It was done in two and a half hours and the bill was $800.00. He didn't even flinch. Yeah, I think I am charging him enough . The rest of the house is going to take a lot more time though. The base is 1/2" off the ground and all the strip will need to be replaced and built up somehow.

Impossible. They have to at least flinch!

Good show though, that's some wild looking carpet. Please post pics of the install if the customer doesn't mind, I'd like to see it in a room.

Even though those contractors don't use you, they do know who to call IF they do need the best.
