We are in no way undermining your use of the canopy, but you are aware that the fabric in that canopy will get more brittle with time and more susceptible to damage from heat. The roofing material covering our back porch are clear corrugated plastic sheets (kinda like a big skylight), and even though it's very high, we are always concerned about firing up the barbie for long periods of time under it, in case we scorch it.

I will not post pictures!!!!!
But it worked  I procrastinated till the very last minute before the reception at my house 3 weeks ago. I did not do the baseball stitch. I did the 'what ever looks like it will hold stitch'.
There is a lot of tension on this awning but the polyester thread held. I used a combination of 3 colors that were in the original fabric twisted together to mimic the size of the original fabric thread.
No rips no tears.
Thanx David for the suggestions.
