Faux Columns

Almost 6 months ago, when I first envisioned my apartment remodeled, I wanted faux beams and on one wall, I wanted the beams to appear to be held up by faux columns. Here's a picture of that plan:

Today I installed the columns, which are really just some 2½" MDF trim and some base shoe molding on the sides for detail. Now I'm not so sure this was a good plan after all. Pictures:

The room is a mess, of course, and I don't have any pictures up. The columns haven't even been caulked or touched up yet, so maybe I am just being critical too soon.

The idea behind the columns was to give the room some architectural detail and the illusion of height. That wall is also a feature wall, in that it will be my personal photo gallery. I've never really displayed my photography before - not like I want to here anyway.

Prob'ly when the room is finished this will just seem like so much nervousness. The flooring, which will have the look of hardwood, will be flowing the length of the room and once the room is furnished, it will not seem so stark and linear.

Just trying to find things to do while I wait for the countertop hardware.

How come when your 'puter is on, it's always got TFP on it?
You do well as a designer Jim. It's all coming together real nice.

Re: Faux Columns

Jim,

You have achieved exactly what you described - architectural detail and height. With the lines going up and over in a light color, it draws the eye and expands the room upwards! Can't wait to see it when you are finished and have put up the photos. Also, I told you this before, but the paint color you used is great.
