HGTV Fan?
These days I watch way too much TV. One of my favorites is the HGTV channel. Of course I have to hold myself back from being too critical of the flooring parts, but over all, I really enjoy watching the design shows - both interiors and exteriors. I really believe it is what inspired me to remodel my apartment.
So what about you people? Do you watch HGTV or any other programming similar to it? Got any favorites?

Re: HGTV Fan?
In the past few years, I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've watched those shows. Years ago I used to watch HomeTime, but when they started doing tile or wood on some of those shows, I'd have to change the channel. Some of the things they did on there were pretty sickening to watch.
If they were going to screw those jobs up, the least they could do is make them closer to my home so I could tear out and redo them in a few years.

I like those shows, but they are too expensive here. It would double my cable bill. I always cringed when they installed carpet.

My sweet bride flips back and forth between HGTV and Food Network.
Holmes on Homes! Just saw that this week for the first time. Best thing on HGTV since Designing for the sexes.

I always liked that show and think I learned a lot from Dean Johnson (and his many female partners).

I enjoy that show too, but he does seem to go off the deep end sometimes.

Do any of you have a favorite?
I tend to like the design shows the most - Divine Design, Color Splash, Dear Genevieve and a new one called Curb Appeal: The Block. Too damn many real estate shows though, although a few of them do have some cool make-overs.

Re: HGTV Fan?
Divine Design with Candice Olsen, if you want to see what a 'real' Interior Designer does, this is the show to watch. Her use of space, color, texture and especially lighting, is absolutely incredible.
Just under 80% of our annual revenue comes from the design trade. Yes, the design trade has a lot of goof balls, especially beware of those who claim to do 'staging', but that's a different topic. When you watch Candice, there are several things that she does that all successful designers do. The most significant of which is, they find exceptional trade professionals and use the same ones on every job. They do not shop services, which is why it is so difficult to earn a spot on 'their' team.
People here like to talk about the 'Designer' business and working with designers and that's fine. However, the only way any business dealings with Interior Designers is profitable, is for us to become 'their' source. We need to become a part of 'their' crew. We must be a part of 'their' team and we must cooperatively work with all the other players. We can never be a source of problems, only the solution to them.
The reason I say all this is, Divine Design is a great show. Candice does fantastic design work, but as were watching, we need to watch Chico and the other guys, we need to watch how they work, watch their 'can do' and 'just say yes' attitude. Because the most critical element of working successfully, longterm, with true professional designers is all in our attitude.
The benefit / reward for this attitudinal adjustment is, we get to name our price, get paid promptly and never have to sell a job, we simply show up and do whatever is asked and write the invoice accordingly.
If anyone wants insight in how a true Interior Designer works, watch Divine Design and observe the interactions between Candice and her crew.

Re: HGTV Fan?
With most of those decorator shows, I catch myself thinking "it looked better before they started."

Re: HGTV Fan?
I will agree with Dobby that that is the way it SHOULD be.
I had a decorator for about 7 years who was exactly that way, get it done, never questioned the invoice. Then she started to take on some "different" clients, let's just say they came from the land of elephants, tigers, and cobras. All of a sudden "price" became paramount in importance. Cost cutting and cut corners was going to become the norm, so I had to move on.

Re: HGTV Fan?
Discounts and corner cutting are easy, shoot, nearly all our industry is fighting for the chance to cut a corner and win a job as the low bidder, they certainly don't need me in the fray.
It's quality, reliability, trustworthiness and discretion that we offer.
