replacing tile around fireplace

Traditional cream wood fireplace with 12 inch ceramic surround and hearth. Want to replace with a travertine or tile color to coordinate with the cream wood. Any suggestions? We want this to be a DIY project.

Is the mantle sitting on top of the existing ceramic, or were the tiles laid after the fireplace was installed?

The fireplace was installed when the house was built about 12 years ago. The tile surrounds the firebox and the mantel is sitting on top of the tile.

If this is a wood burning fireplace, you need to think about soot. A porous tile will be almost impossible to keep clean. Most contractors would suggest a stone tile, like Granite or Marble.
